Mr. Magoo

I remember others mentioning the Mr. Magoo cartoons in Requiem and Smokey Putnam, but I had never taken a good look at them until this past week. I was trying to take a photo of the carnies and Red, when I happened to freeze frame the TV show the carnies were watching. It was Mr. Magoo. Seeing it all these months later, I had a very different reaction. The cartoon frames feature Magoo in front of a man hanging upside down and holding a rose. It made me think of Tom being tortured by Garvey and the rose Liz put  on his grave. Were the Magoo cartoons foreshadowing Garvey? He does sort of look like Magoo. But wearing thick glasses. I didn't get any specific foreshadowing from seeing Mr. Kaplan's cartoon. But she had it on for noise purposes.

When the Magoo cartoons first came up, I thought it was some kind of inside joke with Spader. Apparently he is as blind as Magoo without his glasses.

I did some research on Mr. Magoo. The script writer had been blacklisted during the McCarthy era, and the animator was an ex-Communist. In the earliest Magoo episodes, he was a mean spirited McCarthy-like character, and the cartoon was the creators' way of getting back at McCarthy.

Re: Mr. Magoo

I recall Red's disguise with the thick glasses reminding me of Mr. Magoo.
Interesting stuff, as usual, Tuxie400. I'm glad you keep sharing these sorts of things here.

Re: Mr. Magoo

Honey West - Yes, those Coke Bottle glasses did seem like something Magoo needed. LOL  I'm glad you enjoy my strange little tidbits.

Re: Mr. Magoo

Yes, the glasses in Susan Hargrave made me think of Magoo.

Re: Mr. Magoo

Tuxie400 - thanks for the info on the cartoons.  As you know, I have been somewhat fascinated by them and what they mean and who is watching them, but could never see what the Magoo scene actually was.

I did some research at the time as well, and a plot line or inference that was later dropped from the cartoons was that Mr Magoo was often thought at first by those who encountered him (in the cartoons)  to be mentally ill, because he would go up to things and start talking to them or behaving oddly towards them - but that was just because his eyesight was so poor, as it happens, that he could not see what or who they were and mistook them for OTHER things.  Interesting, no?

But what the actual scenes that we were shown mean, if anything, is also interesting.  Magoo was also on the TV screen in the hotel room with Masha and Kate, and then in the next shot of the TV screen, its another cartoon - was it Aladdin?  had replaced it.  In that Magoo scene, I think Magoo was wearing a kind of trench coat and hat, kind of like a detective.  Unless I am totally mis-remembering that -  its possible!  LOL.

Re: Mr. Magoo

lara1 - I can totally see why other characters in the cartoon would think Magoo was mentally ill. I rewatched Requiem last night. In the one Kaplan uses to drown out the noise, he's wearing a green bathrobe and is holding a bottle and spoon, like he's taking medicine. Magoo says, "Just what the doctor ordered." His hat is on a nearbly table. That reminded me of Red's poisoning ordeal in the Apothecary. In the scene with Kate and Masha playing Go Fish, the cartoon shows Magoo wearing his trademark green coat with black collar and dark brown hat. He is next to a rotund man with a turban who is sleeping in a bed. (Maybe the turban made you think it was Aladdin.) Anyway Turban guy sort of looks like Little Nikos. I didn't see any hat and trenchcoat, but  it would have been interesting if he was, since the person we think is Red in the fire memories is dressed that way.

Re: Mr. Magoo

Tuxie400 - thanks for that.  Your posts are so interesting.

So -

in one cartoon, Magoo wears a GREEN bathrobe and is (maybe) taking medication because that is just what the doctor ordered.  A hat is on the side.

in another cartoon, Magoo is wearing his TRADEMARK GREEN coat, and a brown hat. (that's probably what I was remembering as the trench coat LOL)

In Susan Hargarve, Red wears Magoo like glasses to fool  airport security.

Re: Mr. Magoo

So here are a few things I found.

I found a few episodes where MR. Magoo is on a ship.
These were from 1964. The ones I found so interesting were,

Treasure Island, plays the pirate Long John Silver.

Moby Dick, Plays Ishmael the sailor on Captain Ahab's ship.

& Captain Kidd,

Then I found a link showing the ship with the figurehead that had red hair that we saw on the TV.
It is about half way down.  But I didn't have time to read it all to see which episode it went to.

Re: Mr. Magoo

Thanks, Eastcoast, that's interesting.  Is that the correct link, though?  It seems to be about a bugs bunny cartoon, and a Mighty Mouse cartoon?  There is a ship and figurehead, but its from Mighty Mouse....unless I'm reading that incorrectly.  You are right though, I remember seeing a ship figurehead with red hair, I just think its a different cartoon.     LOL, so funny we are analyzing cartoons!!!   But I love it!
LOL.

Re: Mr. Magoo

I saw that too and thought that maybe I didn't read enough of it. I was on google looking up MR Magoo episodes that had ships/figureheads and this link was in images.  Yes, I told myself I can't believe I am looking up cartoons!! lol

Re: Mr. Magoo

lara1 - There is a Magoo cartoon where he wears a tan trench coat and a hat. I saw it when I looked up images of Magoo. Maybe you saw that, and it stuck in your mind.

Tuxie400,  that is probably it.  I saw it when doing Magoo "research" LOL.  Or, it brought back my own idea of Magoo as I remember watching that cartoon as a child.  Little did I know then.......haha.

Re: Mr. Magoo

oh yes, I forgot to mention about Magoo - it also produced the first animated Christmas special back in around 1962 - Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol.
