Tuxie400 - thanks.  That was the part where I closed my eyes and winced.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

it would make sense if it wasn’t Nick Cave singing that I can’t find it.  But I swear i heard  his dulcet tones somewhere...I was watching with family and my grandmother doesn’t know how to stay quiet while watching television.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

Brittany - I honestly can't remember whether the version was heavy on piano or not.  It was a bit mournful I thought so thought it was Disturbed.  And piano would fit in with one of the overall series themes.  But whichever, a beautiful song and appropriate.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

OK, a smaller point.  Did anyone notice the look that Cooper gave to Red when Cooper went into the hospital?  And it was Cooper with Tom at the morgue, which I found a bit odd.

No I'm not going to say its a fake death.  I really really don't think it is.  A real death.  But there was more to Tom than met the eye.  And Dembe implying that the story Red gave Tom was made up or in some other way untrue.  There's maybe another reason why Red did not touch Tom - in fact the opposite, saved him several times.  And Tom was CIA at one point.  Maybe has been for a long time and still was.  Who knows.
But I think there was something else going on.  We may not find out until the end of the series.

Well those are my thoughts anyway.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

Lara, it's funny, while my mom disagrees with me, I took the look Harold gave to Red while entering the hospital as "are you finally done with putting Liz in danger?!?!?!"

And seriously....whoever Red is....Liz has certainly been in a lot of danger since he turned himself in!

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

I don't think Red made up anything he said to Tom. I think Dembe was just disappointed Red being put in this spot didn't go ahead and tell Tom and Liz the truth. Red is still very far from being able to do that.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

OK, last thought for the night (no promised though! ha).  Did anyone else think it unusual that Red was not in the hospital with Liz, that he stayed in the car?  Maybe it was just that he might be recognized if he went inside?  though that hasn't stopped him from being in public places before.

tuxie400 - it could be.  I need to re-watch what Dembe said to him.  Whether he said, you're not telling him the truth, or something more like, you need to tell him the truth.  Slightly different meaning.  But yes, I agree, it could be what you said.

JackPow - it could be.  To me, there was definitely a known look between them.  It could also be Cooper empathizing with Red knowing tom and Liz may not pull through.

I still think it a bit odd that Cooper was the one with Tom in the morgue though.  Maybe not.  Maybe there just was no one else.  But where was Howard?  Scottie in prison would not have been there but what about Howard?
It was all just odd, to me, anyway.

Nick Cave is my favourite musician ever - well, right along with Leonard Cohen and Neil Young.
Sad to report the final song was NOT Nick & His Bad Seeds. It was indeed Disturbed - but had a Nick Cave edge to it.

Original S & G was great - no real match to the harmonies by Tom & Jerry! But Disturbed was far darker, grittier and much, much heavier. It really worked like crazy!

If you want a tip for a nick cave song - look at this video of 'Red Right Hand' - hey, that could be the simple story of Red & his african protege Dembe!          https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=nick+cave+youtube+red+right+hand&view=detail&mid=B820C618C799C9DD4C57B820C618C799C9DD4C57&FORM=VIRE

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

The post episode interviews with the creators left me confused about something.

So prior to reading the interviews, I assumed we'd resume in January with a series of flashback episodes, watching how Red eventually caught Ian Garvey while Liz was in the coma. But now it seems the show will resume in present day (10 months later) as Red BEGINS a hunt for Garvey. (Or at least continues the hunt)

Why would Garvey escape and then hold the bones for ten months? Why doesn't he immediately act on these valuable bones he's in possession of? Confront Red right away. Or find the highest bidder right away. Why the wait?

Unless I've misunderstood something. Obviously so much is missing to this story. I must go to sleep here on the east coast! But my thoughts tomorrow will be on why Garvey would STILL have the bones ten months later.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

Here's a unique female version of Sounds of Silence, very well done - but for purposes of this episode Disturbed's version was the absolute right choice!

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

JackPow - The first episode back will be like Liz's version of Cape May - an exercise in making sense of what happened and a time of self-discovery. It does seem weird that Red wouldn't have taken care of Garvey and the bones during that 10 months. But Garvey will be the big bad for the back end of the season. I'm sure there will some flashbacks that show what Red was doing during that time Liz was in the coma.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

And can we please talk about Dembe saying that Red is lying to Liz?  It could be about the big secret, it could be about the whole “Tom’s missing and aim helping you look for him” thing, but as I have preached from my pulpit (even if just to the empty room until I found the fandom) but Red does lie to Liz.  Maybe not a lot of outright lies.  Lots of half truth, semantics, and omissions.   I do think he tries to reserve the whoppers for big things, but we finally have someone in the know talking about him lying to her.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

I think it will be interesting if Liz does a "Red" and wants to immediately go after and find who did this to Tom. Kind of like this turns her more "red-like".  They did hint at vigiliante-ism in the Nik cemetery scene.

And the even more interesting thing is that the reason at the heart of it is Red and the secret he is keeping from her that the bones symbolize.  So not leaving well enough alone (Which Red counseled Ressler, Ressler did not listen, as Red himself did not and indeed Tom never did) may lead to a very very interesting position with her vis a vis Red.

Makes sense.  I listened to it andnheard why I thought Nick Cave.  And I’m totally with you on Leonard as well.

Re: Episode 5.08 - Ian Garvey - Discussion Page

Brittany - thanks for that.  That was what I was trying to remember about what Dembe said to Red.  He did in fact say that he was lying to Liz (and maybe to Tom?).  But I need to re-listen to what Dembe said, and in what order.  So what exactly is he lying about?  Kaplan told Red he was not honest with Liz.  But outright lying takes it to a different level, for me at least.

I keep coming back to Red manipulating Liz but I don't think that's the case if he genuinely cares about her and was going to kill himself when he thought she died.  Unless its not her as such but what he needs her for.  If she's the key to something that gives him purpose.  Of course the whole thing parallels back to prior seasons.  We haven't heard Dembe say such things to Red since Season 3 I don't think.    LOL

Here's a song from Leonard that didn't make the fall finale. You Want it Darker from his last album of the same name. Wonderful song - lets use it as a toast to Tom . . . .
