I don't think it's spoilery, but it is interesting that in most photos from the shooting so far this season, where we see Red, he is not wearing a three piece suit. He's not even quite business casual. One of today's photos has him wearing what looks like a robe over his clothes. It made me think of that Mafia guy who tried to make the Feds think he was nuts by walking around on the streets in a bathrobe. What was his name?

I saw the photo with James walking down the street in his robe - certainly less than business casual. LOL And he hasn't been wearing the fedora either. The new Red opts for a baseball cap.

Yes and not only are there what seem to be two episodes with the pool, the pavement around the pool is a huge checkerboard of sorts - with red "blocks" included. LOL. Give me a photo and I'll see a chess or checkerboard.
I'm intrigued about Season 5 but not a fan of casual Red, I find it a bit boring. I'd rather see him in some sort of disguise, or just cheaper brands of suits or matched clothes, the casual is too "normal" for me. LOL. But that's just me. I'll still love watching the show and whatever James brings to it which I sure will be great.

I look at Red's attire as a statement about his "power". His three piece suits and hats are his suit of armor, as it were. When he is wearing less of this "armor" he is, or seems, more vulnerable or less-powerful. Look at him in Artax when Aram comes to see him at Dom's. He's in just a shirt and seems, to me anyway, small and defeated. His armor is gone. When he and Liz were on the run it was more disguise, but at the same time he was very much in defense mode and didn't have his usual control over things, even though he was doing his best to stay ahead of everyone and keep Liz and himself safe.

I agree, it just isn't him to me. lara1, it does look boring for him.
HW, armor was a good word. He does look weak in those clothes .... I was thinking it does not look very exciting. I guess they are thinking they will make up for it with action.

I am thinking that with Red in rebuilding mode, he might even have reached a point where he could "retire". But I doubt that he ever can. He has too many enemies for one thing. Maybe he is on a little vacation? He must have located the suitcase, unless he's biding his time and only suspects where it is and is patiently planning to get it back. Of course we all know that Tom could have been talking to him on the phone and so he already has it back by the time he is hanging out by the pool.
But no, I don't think Red can retire. Not yet. I still think his criminal empire existed for more than to keep Liz safe, although that may have been his personal motivation. Whatever his purpose has been still exists, and keeping her safe is probably a very important part of the whole puzzle of what it is. So he will rebuild, make new alliances, whatever it takes. We can be sure he has a lot of resources left in his hidden bunkers and caches in every state, and probably a lot of countries. Maybe it's good that his old alliances have been swept away, because as we have been shown, many of those older ones were built on deceit on his part, like the kidnapping gone bad, for instance. It will be interesting to see how he comes back. And when he gets his fedora back. (grin)

I always thought of Red's fedora like the Lone Ranger's mask. He's not the same character without it.

Tuxie400 - thanks, yes, that's what is missing and what is probably bothering me. It (the fedora) is his trademark of sorts.
I wonder if in the scenes we have seen, Red is deliberately dressing down even further in order to "blend in". We haven't seen all of the scenes, for instance when they filmed out at a mansion on Long Island, so who knows what happened in those scenes. I just keep thinking that Red could dress down without appearing to be so "grey". Just IMO of course. I can't wait to find out though!

Lone Ranger mask. I like that!
Miles McGrath said it -"the Raymond Reddington, concierge of crime, Man in the Hat, the spy who Stayed out in the cold." I still don't think we've heard the last of Miles.

Hi Everyone!! RL is still hectic but I went to NYC yesterday - planned on going to Coney Island. Then saw on "OnLocationVacation" that TBL was filming a couple blocks away from the Port Authority, where I get off the bus. Was able to meet Hisham and Ryan when they arrived. Didn't get to meet James, but did see him. Also saw some filming outside, where Ryan walked out of a deli doorway.
Hisham and Ryan were incredibly nice, as were all the crew working on the show. I met other incredibly nice fans from Long Island, Washington State, Germany, Argentina, and Brazil. As with here on Refugees, I was surrounded by sincerely, friendly good people.
I can't put into words how surreal and lucky it felt to be there.
Coney Island will have to wait!

Anyway, the reason I posted here in spoilers is because all the fans were sharing their photos with each other. I didn't see the pool filming, but a few of the fans happened to be staying at the same hotel, which was next door to the deli filming. From the pool photos I saw, it didn't look like Red was there. There were a few fellows with cowboy hats.
I think Red had two costumes. One where he wore a baggy greenish tee shirt, bathrobe, and either light grey pajama bottoms or maybe even hospital scrubs. The only other time I recall him wearing a bathrobe was immediately after surgery for being shot in season two. Will have to recheck my photos but I think the other outfit was a dark blue baseball cap, less baggy pants, and a less baggy dark tee shirt. (Update- besides the cap, the other outfit was dark blue/black jeans or more fitted pants, similar color tee shirt, similar color unbuttoned shirt, and I think a similar color light jacket. The man knows how to dress in layers.)
I'm a total sucker for the fedora too - everyone's suggestions for his casual outfits make a lot of sense. A while ago, there was a Tumblr post comparing Red's suits to a work uniform - making a good case for his still being employed by the Navy (maybe Aly or Tess? I'll try to find it again). Given the uniform/suit employment theory, did Red get fired or laid off? Imagine processing his unemployment paperwork!

Colleen, so glad you got to meet them! And catch some filming. That is great.
And thanks for sharing the filming intel. Yes looking closely it does look like Red is wearing either pajamas or hospital scrubs (looks like there may be a drawstring type waist thing). But why he may be walking near a deli with them on is a mystery, if he wasn't filming in the hotel. Especially since when they filmed there a few weeks ago he seemed to be in an expensive vintage RED sports car! very curious!! Maybe he owned it and sold it! ha ha. who knows it could be anything!!

Colleen - NICE!!! Sounds like you had a lot of fun amongst other BL fans! And it seems like all the actors are so kind and patient with the fans. Just wanted to say reading your post made me excited for the new season to start!

Fun stuff, Colleen! I'm on the other coast so i have to live vicariously through other peoples' adventures in NYC! Sounds way more fun that Coney island, although I've never been there either! LOL!

ew.com has some photos from season 5. I can't seem to copy the link here on my slow at-work cell phone hot spot connection, or even see them because they are so slow to load, but...it looks like Tom has the suitcase in their apartment. So maybe it was Liz he was talking to on the phone. They just show him with the suitcase, maybe Red swoops in to grab it before Liz gets home?
Offline
Thanks Honeywest. Your post sent me to Aly's site where she has posted it too.
Yes its curious as to whether Tom will give the suitcase to Liz or he doesn't for some as yet to be explained reason.
I have to say I'm not that excited about seeing too much of Tom. I do like Ryan and think he has done a great job portraying Tom's many "selves" but I think that the story flows so much more smoothly without so much of him. For me too much Tom is a distraction and chops up the story - I thought the end of Season 4 was so much better without him. Just IMO of course. I do like him in small doses I am just hoping that they balance out how they use him. Just my two cents...

Colleen, Good for you!!! I am so happy you got to meet them. I agree, Coney Island would have to wait.
Thanks for sharing!

I saw those pics too. The first thing I thought is, I think that's in their apartment!
So maybe Tom was talking to Liz?

In the ew photos Tom is wearing a different shirt when he is looking into the suitcase from what he is wearing in the photos with Liz. So she might not necessarily see the suitcase after all.
