Freemasonry?

When looking into the tatoo symbol in the Architect, I came across some Freemason symbols that may (or may not) be expressed in the Blacklist.

I know that someone previously wrote about this (Colleen, Tuxie400?) but I could not find that thread, sorry.
And I know it was mentioned that one of the symbols is a sort of checkerboard, and I think Tatiana may have shared a screen cap of the black and white checkered floor on the restaurant that Red and Liz go to in Montreal in the second episode of Season 1.  And there have been loads of checks and checkerboard references (which could also be chess board )

So while I was researching the tattoo symbol that the Architect had, I came across this on the kind of checkerboard symbolism in the series.  I looked at a whole bunch of information sources about the checkerboard and found this:

The symbol, which is three boxes, with a checkered pattern in each, comes from Euclid's 47th Problem:Euclid wrote a set of thirteen books, which were called “Elements”. Each book contained  geometric problems and theories. The “47th problem” was set out in Book 1, which is also known as “The Pythagorean Theorem”.  The theorem states that, in right triangles, the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other tow sides: A2 + B2 = C2 The theorem is important in various disciplines, which we have seen represented in The Blacklist:

  • in architecture, it is very important:  builders use the  theorem in constructing buildings by a process known as “squaring a room” - no squared rooms without it!
  •
  • In astronomy, the theorem is used to calculate the distance of the sun, the moon, and the planets and ultimately in calculating the seasons
  •
  • In navigation, the 47th problem is used to determine latitude and longitude when sailing

In some lodges a candidate symbolically “squares the Lodge” by being escorted around the Lodge three times during the Entered Apprentice ritual.  Also, the Third Degree is something bestowed on someone who then becomes a Master Mason.

And an interesting connection - in The Wizard of Oz, when the scarecrow gets his diploma from the Wizard, he recites the theorem, incorrectly, and then concludes that he is happy and he now has a brain.

I haven’t really looked into this is any detail, but other Masonic symbols I have discovered that have made an appearance in the series are the hourglass, the beehive, and something called a 24 inch gauge. I also ran across a book called “Building Janus” - Janus was the company that “The Forecaster” worked for, that is raided toward the end of that episode.   I haven’t had time to look into the book, but the title intrigued me.  Separately, Red has recently used the term "hoodwinked" which apparently is also a term used for the blindfold worn by candidates during degree ceremonies.

I don't really want to mention much more, because I really don't have a good enough understanding of this, and I'd rather return with more info when I've had time to research it a bit more.

But I did find the reference to the 47th Problem, as part of a series of books called The Elements; triangles, the checkerboard symbol and related info quite intriguing.

Re: Freemasonry?

Fascinating stuff Lara1!

I've always been interested in the Masons because there is a beautiful Masonic Temple here in Scranton that is our city's cultural center. Folks can tour the building and see secret doors, unusual rooms - its a mysterious castle the local Masons share with the community.

I looked up #47 and had flashbacks to high school geometry. Then saw that there is an Agent 47 - a character from a video game and later a movie titled Hitman. In the game #47 was the result of cloning research. In the movie #47 was created using orphaned children.

Very interesting stuff, lara1 (checkerboard)  and Colleen. I noticed Ulrich Thomsen played the president of Russia in the movie, Hitman (Agent 47). Cloning and orphaned children!
