Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

I've been going over some of the Season 4 scripts and found this watch reference in Miles McGrath:

Red: I know an ex-SEAL commander, recruited some former colleagues, formed an elite heist crew. I hired them once to get back a shamefully expensive Patek Philippe [ $$$ watch ] I foolishly left on the nightstand in Ras Al Khaimah [ in the UAE ] after a dalliance with a lovely but very… Oh, never mind.

When that commander, John Halback sees Red, he says: "Don't tell me you lost that watch again!"

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

Thanks Tuxie400!  I added that to the clock list.

Also - what I did just out of interest, is scroll through 2 seasons (I think I did 1 and 4), just randomly looking for the word, "time".  Its amazing how often thet word is used, several times in each episode,  in some I counted 10 or more!

So I think you would expect these sorts of phrases in this kind of show, but there is a lot of  "I'm out of time," "I don't have more time," "we don't have any more time".  And I noticed in the last episode (winter finale) that Red or someone else uses that phrase or something similar.   "How long can you keep me alive,"; and, later in the episode, "how much time" or "out of time", something like that.  And at the end in the ICU scene, when Liz asks whether they can go in and see Red yet, the doctor says something like "give him a few more minutes...."

Again nothing out of the ordinary and fits the context.  But I am surprised by how many times it comes up within a context with Red specifically.

Food for thought!  (or should that be, "time for thought"  LOL)

And of course Red told the task force that he didn't "have the luxury of time." Before he went off to look for Dembe.

lara1 - It's amazing how many references to time there are!

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

The clocks are jumping at at me all over the place today. In the Forecaster when Liz, Tom, Samar and Aram are in the park looking for the murder victim, Samar looks up and sees a giant clock on a gray building and hears it chime as the clock strikes 12:30.

Tuxie400 - LOL!!  yes, and I think in the episode that is meant to be the Post Office Tower.  That's what got me really thinking again.  The time - 10 minutes past the latest time we saw on the clock in the fire memories.  And does it relate in any way to the Post Office (i.e. FBI task force).

Here's another mention of time in 4.15:
Red re Dembe, to the Post Office: While you try to save my life, I'll spend what time I have saving his.
And in one of the music selections, the Mamas and Papas are singing about time....

In 4.08, Adrian Shaw Conclusion, the word "time" is mentioned 14 times.  here are some interesting ones:

Red to Dembe re Liz: Well, she'll be safe with him until Kirk's doctors confirm she's not his daughter, but we don't have much time.
Exchange between Adrian Shaw and Red: This is going to take some time. I'm out of time, Doctor, which means you're out of time.
Dembe to Red: We can find her.   Red: There's no more time. Dembe: He'll kill you, no matter what you do or say. You can't go.
Red: It's Elizabeth.
Dembe to Red while waiting for Kirk's men on the park bench: If we can get the woman...
Red: It's too late for her to save Elizabeth.
Dembe:But perhaps she can save you.

I don't think this is just about saving Liz from Kirk, or Red running out of time in the winter finale re finding Dembe or saving his own life.  I think its part of the larger arc, as right in the pilot, there are clocks and references to time with Cooper saying, "We're on the clock."

Some of us have theorized the one reason that Red came back now, is that the clock is running out on him for some reason.  He is running out of time to get something done.  Something that he needs to do.  The bits and pieces Red has said to Liz about why he came back are incomplete, and he acknowledges that he is telling her "some of it" re the reasons.

Interesting!

lara1 - Wow! Time is mentioned 14 times in Adrian Shaw Pt.2! Time may be running out for Red!

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

Lara - I love this clock image! It's from the Stewmaker:
(reminds me of the works Red tinkers with on the music box and the Cuckoo Clock)

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

the Stewmaker when they arrive at the Cornish's house. There's a classic wall clock with 5:40 on the face.

Lara - I keep finding more! The clock is at 9:40. The Courier. This is the apartment of the strange writer who never published and kept milky hooch hidden away.

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

Tatiana - interesting!  and wasn't that the same writer who wrote into a newspaper editorial section complaining about "all of the rabbits" or something like that?

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

Yes, the very same writer.
"What's with the rabbits???"
I laughed out loud.

I hope that when this show ends and the talent disperses to the four corners of the earth, that some merciful souls will be left with the answers at the back of the magazine so that we can look them up and be certain we solved the puzzle correctly. Mr. Bokenkamp, do you hear me???

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

Tatiana - I love that clock image in #49! Such a dramatic shot! Just beautiful. Like I said before, I'm an auditory learner, hanging on every word in this episodes. It's fun to go back and look at all the visual symbols they were giving us.

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

Eastcoast and Tatiana mentioned a "time" reference on the Independence, USA episode thread.  Song by Josh Ritter titled Change of Time.  Can't quote it while I'm online via phone, but it's a beautiful song

"I'm happy you're happy. Eat your pie."

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

Lara - you had keyed in on the number 36 as it was one of the first numbers mentioned in the pilot - 36 hours.
It also came up on twitter:
Blacklist Writers‏@BlacklistRoom  Feb 9
36 is such a specific number to love, Samar. Anyone have any guesses why?

BlacklistDclassified‏@BlacklistDCd  4 Sep 2016
Aram: "His plane is an ark." Samar: "It can't be easy keeping 36 people against their will" [3:6]

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

1936 HItler dropped the Treaty of Versailles

36 may have been mentioned as one of the producer/writers of the show, but it's not exactly clear. Interesting though :-)

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

'Jewish tradition holds that the number 36 has had special significance since the beginning of time: According to the Midrash, the light created by God on the first day of creation shone for exactly 36 hours; it was replaced by the light of the Sun that was created on the Fourth Day.'

Re: Use of Clocks in the Blacklist

'The number 36 is twice 18. In gematria (a form of Jewish numerology), the number 18 stands for "life", because the Hebrew letters that spell chai, meaning "living", add up to 18. Because 36 = 2×18, it represents "two lives".' Wikipedia.

You can really tell I'm doing eight loads of laundry today, can't you?
