Since this is the most active thread, I wanted to see if anyone has looked at the previews for this upcoming episode? I'm going to post something in the "spoilers" discussion.

hi Tatiana - the only preview I've seen is the one that followed right after the end of Ep4. And the spoiler TV photos, which don't show much. I haven't seen any other previews posted anywhere but may have missed them. I think that there was a lot of criticism out there after the preview following ep 2 showed Kaplan to be alive which kind of negated for some the whole impact of the last scene. I don't know if that is anything to do with it at all but there seems to be less out there in the way of previews.

I have been a bit under the weather folks with my allergies! But......
I have been thinking about this too. Stem cells cant be the only reason since he is so hesitant to use the baby.
Let us not forget what Red told Liz back in Mr. .Gregory Devry,
Red says, " There's something you need to see.
This is what we're up against-- a multi-headed hydra. You cut off one head, it grows two others, you have to cut off every head and burn the rest of it.
It's a mythic battle, and it's not anywhere close to being over.
Liz, It's your battle, not mine.
Red, I wish that were true, Lizzy. But the manhunt revealed certain facts that had long been hidden... about you.
Liz, Me?
Red, Katarina Rostova was a name that had been lost to history. Masha Rostova was never more than suspicion and rumor. The manhunt and the publicity it generated changed all of that.
Liz, But who would care that I'm Katarina Rostova's daughter?
Re, The daughter of a legendary spymaster, the secret-keeper who disappeared-- Disappeared?
Liz, You and Sam told me she's dead.
Red, The secrets she took with her could compromise any number of players on that map. They'll be coming. They'll be coming for you.
Liz, But I don't know anything.
Red, They don't know that. You can't walk away, Lizzy. They won't let you. "
If Kirk thinks she is his daughter he might want to protect her..... Or she may be the means to an end..
If Red is her father I think he will have that Dr. manipulate the DNA so she doesn't know he is.
If being KR's daughter is bad think how bad it would be if anyone found out she was his. He has apparently lost one family and I don't think he wants anything to happen to her even if it means her not knowing right now.
As a few people mentioned that was a very bold statement he made with Liz standing there about her Not being Kirks to raise!
(love these little guys!) lol
I have more to say about this but I must get some rest,

You guys have been supplying lots of great info and theories! Here's something that randomly popped in my head in the wee hours this morning......Kirk and Liz's bio dad are brothers. Before he died, he gave Kirk a donation, and it helped Kirk for many years. For some reason, though, it didn't eradicate the disease. So, now Kirk has Liz's dad's dna in him. A dna test could make it appear that he is Liz's father when in fact he is not (blink)
He uses this lie to turn Liz away from Red, foiling Red's plans and ruining whatever endgame Red was working towards (w00t)

I've said it before and I'll say it again - it is so much fun to brainstorm with everyone
And use emogies
Regarding DNA manipulation - wonder if a re-watch of The Alchemist could give us some more clues, now that we have the Kirk-Liz/Agnes-Red context. Also struck me how the Alchemist faked his family's death - FBI found his dead "wife" and "daughter" in pools of blood - reminds me of how Red found his family.
Eastcoast - thanks for the Gregory Devry dialogue - the myth of Hydra is similar to St. George's legend. Both involve killing a dragon/snakelike monster that was ravaging a town's people and livestock. Both heroes had a faithful servant help them. When I googled info on Hydra being killed by Hercules, I cracked up because I imagined Hercules wearing a fedora hat and sunglasses!
Speaking of snakelike monsters - remember when Red talked about Jasper's forked tongue? Red presented his tongue to the Director in a box with a carved snake on its lid.
This show has so much imagery to play with and talk about.

Colleen, had some extra time this afternoon so I re-watched The Alchemist. Didn't really learn much more. Red said that the alchemist would remove the white blood cells from the victim and replace them with red blood cells from the client. Red also said that he would also use cloned and synthetic dna.
I did notice that the painting in the hotel room and the picture on the alchemist's wife's wall were both of boats on the water.

Colleen #127 - the Christmas Eve story with Madeleine Pratt occurs just a few episodes after The Alchemist. So I have often wondered whether Red's family was killed or kidnapped (as The Alchemist kidnapped and tried to fake his family's "death" by changing the DNA of the victims found murdered in his house). (I don't think that Red was responsible, as he doesn't seem to know what happened to his family, I'm just theorizing that someone could have adducted his family and made it look like they were murdered. Maybe.)
Different topic I've been meaning to ask. In Episode 1, when Red, Dembe, and Kaplan walk into the back of the nightclub to interrogate Mato's guy (who has just died on the "operating table" in the club's back room) - there is a portrait/painting prominently displayed on the wall, and Kaplan stands in front of it during that scene where Red beheads the guy. It looks like a famous painting/portrait. Anyone happen to recognize it? It seemed an odd painting to have in that environment so I think it may have a meaning......

Thanks Tabs, #130 - 132, for the info on the two portraits. I did some more digging on the first one, the Portrait of Pietro Bembo. There are some general E. Europe, church/clergy, music and questioned identity themes connected to it:
1. the paining hangs in a museum in Budapest
2. in real life, Pietro Bembo was made a cardinal. He also wrote a kind of treatise which may be a sort of defining work on madrigals. interesting!
3. apparently its been disputed whether the portrait is actually a portrait of Pietro Bembo since apparently the image doesn't resemble other known pictures of him, LOL mysterious identity! have we seen that before!
And as you point out, the man in the portrait is wearing Red. hmmm. I also connected this vaguely to Red's dialog with Skylar's mother in ep.4 - where he discusses Picasso's comment that it took him 4 years to learn how to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to learn to paint like a child.
As for the other portrait, of Raphael's mistress, still looking into that one. I don't think it means that Kaplan was involved with Red way back when !(but you never know on the BL!). I'll see whatever else i can find out about the one....

Tabs #130-132, further to my post #134 above, I did some quick scouting around for info on the other painting, of the woman, on the wall in episode 4.01 . "La Donna Velota", is as you mentioned, the name of the painting and thought to be a portrait of Raphael's mistress. I didn't find too much on this painting, but apparently there is a question over the identity in this portrait also, some saying the she may be another married woman (the veil evidently symbolizes marriage) and not Raphael's mistress; others have said that the portrait is an amalgamation of several woman and represents Raphael's idealized version of female beauty.
Not sure what this all means, but since both paintings are on the wall in that room, reasonably near to each other, is it providing a clue as to Red and Katarina (neither are who you think they are and/or were possibly involved romantically - or not? a married woman?). LOL with so many symbols for both paintings combined, its hard to know.

Off topic but as this is the most active thread, I'll start here and move over to general.
Ive been looking into similarities between St. Nicholas and Red, based on the picture that Colleen P pointed out, over Red's desk in the apartment -
Colleen, I can't remember - had you determined that it (the picture) was St. Nicholas, or was that your best conclusion based on what you could see of the icon? There are some similarities I've found with Red's story or potential story, and St Nicholas is, among other things, patron saint and protector of children. Several stories of how he saved children from death. I'll post what I've found tomorrow, but was trying to see if we'd ever definitely identified that icon as St. Nicholas.....

Tabs and lara1 - How interesting that both of those paintings involve disputed identities! The man with the red beret is standing in for the man who wore a black hat. Surely someone's identity has been switched on The Blacklist!

Hi Tuxie400 #137. After I wrote those notes on the paintings in 4.01, I remembered doing a similar exercise for the large painting that is over the fireplace in Red's flat (and also in the shipping container). With that one, the curator who first chronicled that artist's works (I forget the artist name, I did discuss it over the summer but can't find it) entered that painting twice, with two different names (hmmm!).
It makes me wonder whether there are other paintings out there with similar meanings. The Vermeer with the girl playing a keyboard instrument that Red refers to in one episode was looked into also, (I don't have that discussion to hand), and the one with the ship in the storm that Red was shipping in another episode, and other than that and the paintings in the flat, I'm not sure any others were looked at.

Yesterday was a very unique TBL - mostly due to Martha Plimpton's excellent work as the "Tough Stuff" therapist and John Noble's sensational guesting as The Face-Lifter.
I loved how Reddington laid the law down with Martha on the terms of engagement with Liz. WONDERFUL MATERIAL, GREAT WRITING as Megan continues to stand up to all comers, including Spader in acting terms.
My side angle takeaway of last nite's ep - the Alternative Task Force led by Iain Garvey - the show=runners spent some quality time "PLUMPING THEM UP" for Liz B. Brutal (aka Black Liz) when the time comes for them to "FACE THE MUSIC". Wonder what song or songs the runners will use when Liz goes after the ARTF (Alternative Reddington Task Force) . . . . . may as well get Ring of Fire warmed up - I smell somethin' burnin' . . . . lol
