Episode 8.18 - The Protean

Hope it's another good one! Of course, with number 18, we are starting to build towards the season finale. I keep reading that we will have a resolution of the Red/Liz conflict before the end, so we shall see!

Meanwhile, enjoy your snacks! I haven't decided what I'm going to have yet.

Protean is one sleazy smoothie, ain't he?

But he's never been up against Liz's script-writers!!! lol

For sake of time Liz's so-called protective detail was dispatched in under 40 seconds by The Protean. They should have found a hardware store with more secure locking devices!

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

Not one of my favorite episodes, but it gives me hope that they are going to introduce some more interesting supporting characters if Liz is going to continue to have a team.

I'm not sure what the point was in killing off Jennifer, unless it's to tie up a loose end and give Liz a reason to be more of a badass in the future.

They've got to make some big changes if they want to pull in a decent audience next season. I think they know that.

Eastcoast, my snack was a slice of fresh apple pie from a neighbor, who made one dozen pies (!) for her daughter's graduation from nursing school. Essentially, all of their guests will have a pie to take home. She even made several mini pies for those on diets!

I do miss Glen, but I Paula soooo much. And the rest of the BINGO gang was wonderful!

Made up for the huge mess made from a certain someone's reckLIZ  behavior.

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

I like the episode - especially Paula and the Bingo Gang!  High body count in this episode, but a riveting plot for me.  How did Jennifer get back into Witness Protection?  Sad death for her.  I didn't have much sympathy for Liz's team. I'm wondering what Red will do next week to get Liz out of FBI custody.

The Bingo scene was incredibly anti-Blacklist. Guess thats why it worked so well. Spader & Paula are an unlikely couple of super-grifters!

You knew Skip's days were numbered when Liz gave him a nod of appreciation, minutes before his demise. I kinda liked the corn-row girl as she was a long-serving member of Liz's detail but Skip and the other lady were too disposable from the get-go.

Liz's sister's demise at the hands of Hans Gruber, Jr. came as a big surprise.

I thought Priya was going to finish a 2nd episode but I guess not.

The surprise superstar of the season was Glenn's mom, Paula. What a grand performance she put in tonite!

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

The saddest part about this episode was Liz mourning Jennifer, Skip and Esi, but not mentioning Jax even once. I know she wasn't too relevant for the plot, but I'd expect her to mean more to Liz after all this time.

Other than that it was an okay episode. Had some holes but kept the tension going.

Worst hole obviously (and there's been some whoppers) is Liz, Skip, Esi & Jax knowing they've got a vicious campaigner out for their blood, already killed their lead gunman and they're more interested in soup 'n sandwiches than kitty bar the door. Basically, it became almost too easy for Hans Gruber, Jr. to slip the hardware store lock and assassinate Liz's 3 remaining amigos!

Essentially, the writing has always insured Liz gets off the hook - while good friends die. Similar logic how Ressler & the B-team always a day late and a dollar short to the scene of the crime!

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

Two great music pieces in this episode. TBL had always had a fantastic sound track, but the past few years they don't have the same budget. I think Jon Bokenkamp has a heavy influence on the tunes that are played.
Tunefind lists Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers and I'd Love to Change the World by Ten Years After. I thought it was a different tune than Summer Breeze, but "I'd Love to Change the World" is fantastic.

Lots of violence and death. I think they're just driving home how Liz has switched over into the "netherworld" and she will never be able to return, just as Red says to Harold. We both know she's never going to be part of your world again.

She belongs in mine.

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

I had mixed feelings about this episode.

Tuxie, it was a sad death for her.
Bringing Jennifer back just to die?  I just feel like they could have done do much more with her character the last few years.  She was a mythology character without much mythology.  If Liz can escape custody before they take Jennifer's phone, maybe that will give something.  Maybe she will stumble upon some things while feeding the cat?
I'm sure either Red or Townsend will be trying to get Liz before she is taken back to the Post Office.

Yeti, I was going to rewatch to see of i missed her name. I thought she left it out.  That was strange.

BB, when I saw the music being turned up I knew it was not going to go well. (My mind went to the episode of Kaplan and her cleaning ladies)
I thought you have got to be kidding me!  There is  someone after all of you, so you turn up the music and there is a cheap chain lock on the door?  I did like Skip telling him she was in the Rain Forrest.

Redismycopilot,
The Paula character brought a bit of much needed humor. I love how they are showing us where Glen got his gift of story telling from. There are still some loose ends about him. Why dies Red believe she could be broke when he borrowed a million bucks from him?

Tatiana,
I really liked the music on this episode too.  It is nice to see your comments again.

IW, I had Cannolis tonight.  Fresh apple pie sounds awesome!  That was nice of her to make mini pies.

It's a shame you have no crackers

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

I finally got a chance to watch it tonight. Wow, talk about clearing the board; removing loose ends, etc. At least the Protean didn’t get Agnes!

So Red and Harold are going to fight over Liz's soul, I guess. Harold seems to forget that Liz is already a criminal who has no business being an agent. Remember that little issue with the AG?

I do agree with previous comments about Jennifer. Bringing her back just to kill her off seemed a bit harsh, but I guess they are setting up Liz's aloneness in the world now. The only ones left are Agnes and Reddington. That we know of.

The bingo people were fun. We did need a little humor to offset what was otherwise a pretty dark episode.

Liz was pretty upset about losing that link to finding Townsend, but she seems to forget that Red is sure to take him out eventually whatever she does. I wonder how many more episodes Townsend has left?

I agree, the music was great! I’d Love to Change the World is an old favorite of mine. I was so proud of myself when I learned to play the guitar lick many many years ago when I was first learning guitar.

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

I think killing Jennifer was to emphasize Liz's aloneness in the world.  I still think Agnes will get taken.  It's just a matter of time.

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

They've got an entire 10th season to get Agnes kidnapped. I wonder how woeful Liz's security detail for Aggie will be in Season 10?
Perhaps sliding screen doors in a house on the corner of a busy intersection? Clip-on lock device? For someone who's come into mega-millions of criminal wealth, Liz is sure stingy about protecting her daughter!

But she's exceptionally good at talking her way out of personal danger, even with psychotic killers like Townsend. She absorbed a ton of devious tricks from Reddington, Dom, Mr. Kaplan, Glenn, even Aram & Harold.

That's all true, BBB!
Maybe Liz will get a dog for protection? Of course, knowing Liz, it would be a Golden Retriever.

Re: Episode 8.18 - The Protean

In comedic dedication to Liz's top money assistant "Skip" I'm dedicating this episode to his memory and re-naming it

"SKIP THE SECURITY"

Just don't tell Mr. Reddington, OK  . . ? ? ?
