Tuxie, I got on here real quick to say I was thinking we have a medical reference right from the get go. The Promo no less.

Definitely, and there is a doctor listed on IMDB as a character in the first episode!

There's a discussion on another board about how Red is stretched out like he is crucified. I only bring this up because we've had numerous references to old and new testament stories, biblical names, settings in churches, etc. Then I thought of all the number and clock references that Lara and Eastcoast put together. I want to go back to the clocks, but it seems to me there were frequently 9:00 12:00 and 3:00 on clock faces. I'm going to go back and look. In the pilot we're immediately introduced to a 36-hour timeline.
It is believed that the time from Jesus' death to his resurrection is something like 40 hosurs Some theologians have looked at the Jewish observance of day and night and have said it was a 36 hour time period.
Their night started at sundown, sometime after 6pm and their day started at dawn... 5am? I don't know. But it has been suggested that it was a 36 hour timeline.
Interesting too because Jesus death and resurrection are said to have been 3 days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) and the reference is made to Jonas and the whale.
I am starting to think the clock references may be a correlation to the timeline of Jesus' life. Nothing is known of his childhood until he is 12 and speaks in the temple. Then nothing else until he is 30.
On the other hand, it's just a show and who knows what they might have in mind!

Tatiana - Red was also shown in a cell with his arms chained in the crucifix position in Luther Braxton. In that episode, Liz also said, "We have to get him back." More parallels. I think the crucifixion imagery is to play up Red's sacrifice - not to directly compare him to Jesus.

I'm so glad you're tolerant of my theoretical meanderings, Tuxie!

Tatiana - We all do those meanderings from time to time. You know I have. It's too bad Lara's gone. She would get right back into those numbers. I was watching another show last night where a rabbi told a character there are 36 righteous people on Earth at any time. It reminded me how many times the number 36 has come up on BL.

This may not apply to the show, but when you mentioned the significance of 36 in Judaism, it reminded me that the number 18 (half of 36) is very significant. "Chai" is "life". You'll often find jewelry with the chai symbol.
36 is called "double chai" which is an abundance of charity.
