I don’t know how many of you follow true crime, but Ive been obsessed with reading about the capture of the Golden State Killer over the past two days. I just saw an article on NPR today that said when he was arrested he “told the police he had a roast in the oven. The police told him they would take care of it.”. I chuckled because it sounded like something Red might say if he were arrested but it is also very chilling to imagine someone real being so psychopathic that they don’t have anxiety over being arrested for serial murders and can ask police to take care of their dinner.

Thanks for sharing that, Brittany! Honestly, if I heard those lines in a movie or TV show, I'd give kudos to the writers. But knowing they are true, I agree with you about them being chilling.

I’ve been following the case since it started. We could no longer leave our windows open on hot summer nights because of him. He ran through a friend's backyard one night after attacking one of her neighbors. We all thought he must have died or been captured for some other crime years ago. Very shocking to find out he was living right under our noses all this time. but they got him! Kudos to our local detectives who never gave up!

How horrifying HW! I can’t imagine having lived in that area when he was attacking. Just hearing accounts of his attacks were frightening. I’m so glad they caught him. And the ways they did it (running the DNA through a genealogy database to find relatives) was so creative. Great detective work. He wasn’t even in their radar until they found his relatives in the system.

He was in court today for his arraignment. They have him on suicide watch at the jail. The detectives are really hoping to find some of the loot from the crime scenes at his house. Most serial killers keep stuff from their crimes.
From what I understand the DNA and genealogy websites led them to a guy in Oregon who happened to have the same rare genetic mutation as the perp. This guy was their next suspect and it sounds like they obtained some DNA from his trash can and made the final match.
He may never be tried for many of his crimes due to the statute of limitations, but they said that it never runs out on murder or torture crimes.

HW, I am so glad they got this guy. A lot of people can get some kind of closure and not feel like they are looking over their shoulder anymore. I saw him on the news, he looks a bit shocked.
At least he will get tried for the ones that he wont get out of jail for! I am sure they will find some stuff somewhere.

My sister was at Berkeley getting her PhD at the time. Wasn't there also a rapist called "stinky"? At that same time?
This golden State killer would be an ideal subject to study and figure out what makes a guy like this tick.
I can't imagine having lived in that fear for so long. The most traumatic criminal incident I've been near was in my junior year of college when some teenager shot at cars from an overpass just as I was LITERALLY getting off on that exit one night. Had I been a minute later getting out of work I would have been right there on the road where he started shooting. He had already done it is southern Indiana that same day and killed one person. Thankfully no one else died and he was caught quickly, but I refused to drive on that stretch of interstate at night for a year. I can't imagine living for years on end, terrified in your own home that some lunatic is going to break in.
It's sad they can't get him for the rapes (not just statute of limitations, but not all of them were doing rape kits back then), but I hope those women at least get some measure of relief that he is off the streets and will undoubtedly never be out again.
