Re: Episode 5.16 - The Capricorn Killer - Discussion Page

I actually think Liz went "all-in" with Dr. Fulton - in order to give Reddington more security. Fulton is a killer of killers - and Red is a notorious killer - so by taking Fulton on, Liz now has some say in future "pursuits"!

That sounds just like Red.

Yes! In retrospect, she was speaking of the brains behind this killer, right?  Didn't the psychologist describe herself as the serial killer of the serial killers? So would that comment be more apropos of the psych rather than Anthony Elliot Hollis?

When Liz and the profiler are trying to figure out who their target is. Liz, "it makes perfect sense"; profiler "what makes you so sure?" then Liz "Because this is exactly how I would have done it"
Liz's words are an eerie echo of the unreleased book OJ Simpson co-authored entitled "If I Did It"

Re: Episode 5.16 - The Capricorn Killer - Discussion Page

We discussed a little bit about the 4 year old girl who was abducted and killed (and was that a clue or a trigger for Liz?) but later she tells Dr. Fulton of the killer, "he got into law enforcement because both of his parents were killed when he was young"

Liz really was being prepared psychologically for killing the Sandman. Key in on deeply emotional memories and sense of security and safety. She definitely was 'triggered'

Yes, that would be describing Fulton. She's the female Red.

What I also thought was interesting from that scene when she was talking about the other profiler was that he got into law enforcement because of what happened to his parents.  She basically did the same thing.  She had been told her father was a criminal.  So she went on to study criminals.  A parallel between her and the other former profiler (I forget his name now), and that 4 year old girl being abducted and (in that kid's case) killed.  But how much does Fulton know about Liz's history at 4 years old?  Is the fire listed in her file?

Re: Episode 5.16 - The Capricorn Killer - Discussion Page

When I heard that line about Hollis's parents being killed when he was young, it made me think of how many people on the show had that happen. Dembe saw both of his parents slaughtered. Samar discovered her parents had been killed. Ressler's dad died when he was young. Liz was told her mother was dead.

Re: Episode 5.16 - The Capricorn Killer - Discussion Page

It's all about the children, isn't it? So much of this goes back to what happened to you as a child.
Red said something to Liz when she was giving birth... and he thought she was dying. It seemed like a strange thing to say, "it's the children whom the world almost breaks who grow up to save it."

But more and more it goes back to childhood traumas and what it makes of a child. We know that, but it just seems to be a more formed, solidified theme.

Two Sondheim songs, both from INTO THE WOODS, came to my mind when I read your comment.

First, "Children Will Listen":

How do you say to your child in the night?
Nothing's all black, but then nothing's all white
How do you say it will all be all right
When you know that it might not be true?
What do you do?

Careful the things you say
Children will listen
Careful the things you do
Children will see and learn
Children may not obey, but children will listen
Children will look to you for which way to turn
To learn what to be
Careful before you say "Listen to me"
Children will listen

Careful the wish you make
Wishes are children
Careful the path they take
Wishes come true, not free
Careful the spell you cast
Not just on children
Sometimes the spell may last
Past what you can see
And turn against you
Careful the tale you tell
That is the spell
Children will listen

How can you say to a child who's in flight
"Don't slip away and I won't hold so tight"
What can you say that no matter how slight Won't be misunderstood
What do you leave to your child when you're dead?
Only whatever you put in its head
Things that your mother and father had said
Which were left to them too
Careful what you say
Children will listen

Careful you do it too
Children will see
And learn, oh guide them that step away
Children will glisten
Tamper with what is true
And children will turn
If just to be free
Careful before you say
"Listen to me"
Children will listen

----

and also, NO ONE IS ALONE:

CINDERELLA
Mother cannot guide you.
Now you're on you're own.
Only me beside you.
Still, you're not alone.
No one is alone, truly.
No one is alone.
Sometimes people leave you
halfway through the wood.
Others may deceive you.
You decide what's good.
You decide alone.
But no one is alone.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
I wish..

.CINDERELLA(To Little Red)
I know...
Mother isn't here now.

BAKER(to Jack)
Wrong things, right things...
Who knows what she'd say?
Who can say what's true?
Nothing's quite so clear now-
Do things, fight things...
Feel you've lost your way?
You decide, but
You are not alone, You are not alone.
Believe me.
No one is alone.
No one is alone,
Believe me.
Truly...

BOTH
You move just a finger,
Say the slightest word,
Something's bound to linger,
Be heard.
No one acts alone.
Careful, no one is alone.

CINDERELLA
People make mistakes. People make mistakes.
Fathers,
Mothers,

BOTH
People make mistakes,
Holding their own,
Thinking they're alone.

CINDERELLA
Honor their mistakes...
Fight for their mistakes-
Everybody makes-

BOTH
One another's
Terrible mistakes.
Witches can be right,
Giants can be good.
You decide what's right,
You dedide what's good.

CINDERELLA
Just remember:

BAKER
Just remember:

BOTH
Someone is on your side.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD & JACK
Our side.

CINDERELLA & BAKER
Our side-
Someone else is not.
While we're seeing our side-

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD & JACK
Our side....

CINDERELLA & BAKER
Our side-

ALL
Maybe we forgot:
They are not alone.
No one is alone.

CINDERELLA
Hard to see the light now.

BAKER
Just don't let it go.

BOTH
Things will come out tight now.
We can make it so.
Someone is on you side,
No one is alone.

Hi BBB, that is an interesting thought.  Fulton is a killer of serial Killers.  She has called Red a serial killer.

That was the thought I had!  Liz might have been wondering who else is out there in Fulton's world of killers of killers?  This is a threat to her father.

Re: Episode 5.16 - The Capricorn Killer - Discussion Page

BBB - Liz's moves with Fulton could be a way to protect Red as well as herself. With all the parallels we seen this season, I also wonder if this isn't somehow a parallel of Red's first deal when he chose the path he's on now.

Spot on, BBB! Dr. Fulton despises Red so I would imagine he would be one of the top on her list.

If she’s after Big Game, then as top of the Most Wanted list, he’s probably top on her list as well. I think she was recruiting Liz to take him down for her.

I've never been able to get rid of the idea that in the end, it will be Liz who will kill Red, the Moby Dick of whales in the sea of criminals.

If Ian Garvey is the 'Real Red" then ending the show with Black Liz executing Garvey/Real Red that would be total justice - FOR ALL

Exactly! So my fall back all along has been they would be a great team, take down the big bads, until they were down to the last one and she would finally take Red down, the number one on the FBI list, the big fish, in fact, the biggest fish of them all, Moby Dick. But somehow in the very end they will put the last pieces of the puzzle together to find out what happened. They need each other to find the answers they seek..
