Very confusing ep for me. And possibly the least interesting Blacklister ever. The twist certainly was no surprise. I've had insomnia this week, so maybe sleepiness was my problem. Methinks the "new direction" is the old direction. Think about the first January eps of past seasons. By comparison, this one was a quite a letdown. I didn't even think Marlin Trout was funny. The best part of the ep for me was Liz's video for Agnes in the beginning.

Some nice twists tonight!
Just one tiny thing is bugging me -- I'll try to ignore it -- near the end, Red says the inauguration is in two weeks (which it is, Jan. 20), but I was seeing fully leafed out trees with green leaves in the outdoor scenes, more like late September. That really struck me because it's been in the low teens this week, and I woke up to snow this morning. There's no easy fix for that, so I'll try to let it go.

Iowa Watcher - I think they wanted to keep it "topical" i.e. in real time as we did leave off last season with Red extracting that "promise" from Diaz if he got elected president….So now the election is over and Red is calling in his chips….and I'm guessing that they filmed that episode back in November. So I'm willing to overlook it as they wanted to tie it in with the "real" inauguration…and let Liz be an agent again right away.
Good catch though! I didn't even notice that discrepancy! LOL

Chia Pet lol - I will die laughing if that ever shows up on The Blacklist! Maybe on Jellybean's desk or in Red's apartment 😏
Red took backstage this episode but still had a big impact on the post office - Liz becoming an agent again and Samar staying alive.
Nice character development for Samar and Aram.
Aram brought up a major theme of The Blacklist when he talked about the women he's dated - the duality of people, of not being who they appear to be.

Colleen - good catch on Aram's observations…..

Aram and Samar had some wonderful dialog tonite. Aram kinda deserves 1st star for episode, Samar gets #2 star and of course The Red Star is always a star - but #3 tonite!

Harold, Tom, Liz & Baz basically just had cameos tonite! Even some of the criminals got more face-time than them!

Yes very Red-lite, more Ressler for Ressler fans, and of course Samar. Agree there was some nice dialog with Aram and Samar.
Tuxie400 - I did like that touch at the beginning with the video for Agnes. I guess they move out into their new place next time…..

BBB #51 - I think with Liz's reinstatement, they are moving towards Liz having a larger "action" type role again - hopefully working more with Red and with Ressler. So I'm looking forward to that.

BBB - Aram and Samar did have some good scenes, even if I don't understand what either of them meant with their relationship comments. I just wanted them to go on the dinner date. And I wanted Aram to call Tom for the date advice.

I guess you could call them "The Cryptic Twins" - a lot of hi-fashioned mumbo-jumbo, I agree!

Tuxie400 - the thing I found interesting about "marlin trout" was that Red immediately afterwards made the point that it was "one person who had two fish names" or words to that effect. As in, one person had two names. but maybe I am over thinking it! LOL

When Samar told Izzy she had found "another one" I hope she meant Aram - NOT ELISE!
Don't need no "Shaw-Root" action on this show! lol

I looked into "marlin" a bit. According to Wikpeadia, it gets it name from its spindle resembling
Its common name is thought to derive from its resemblance to a sailor's marlinspike. Marlins are especially fast swimmers even for fish! which I guess lines up with two BL themes: sailors and swimming.(I'm leaving out the obvious, ocean and fish!!)
In Hemingway's novel The Old Man and the Sea, the main character of the work is a fisherman who, after 84 days without catching anything, finally breaks his run of bad luck by finally hooking a marlin...the novel illustrates struggles between man, the sea etc.
So in a round about way, it does have some meaning.....

lara1 - I think the Marlin Trout stuff was just an attempt to qualify as this week's Red story, and to make it short and snappy - or snapper since we're on a fish theme. Someone in the writer's room thought that name was hilarious. You're just in the habit of thinking deeply. But I don't think this episode requires it. I do think Aram's stuff was supposed to mirror Red's story with Katarina.

Thanks Lara1 - reading a book on Krampus, sort of the evil twin of St. Nicholas, so the ideas of deception and dark sides are on my mind (and put me in the holiday spirit lol). I want to rewatch Aram rattling off his list of bad girlfriends. Too funny.
Tuxie400 - totally agree that the video at the beginning was a highlight of the episode. Baz's expression was perfect. It's fun to see Red's guys with the baby - fish out of water scenarios (sorry, just couldn't resist).
