I don't know how I missed THIS before, given that this was a gambling-themed episode. Also, bonus points for a certain individual's resemblance to Smokey!

IamCngRed - Spader does have a sleazy Smokey-esque look in that movie. I've never heard of that one before.

I did another rewatch. The scene where he lights the drink
before he shoots the guy was a combination of weird and corny to me. I just didn't like it. I felt like he was losing his mind. It reminded me of something else but I can't think what it was at the moment.

Eastcoast, it reminded me of the campfire scene from Devry(?) where Red is drinking and using the hotdog prong to direct the couple to sing Row Row Row your boat or whatever songe that was. Dembe looks disgusted and finally says, Raymond, enough.

That one too Tatiana. I remember now. It is the one where he is telling the tax guy to testify about is sins with his hand on his head. In the Pattie Sue Edwards episode. Just absolutely out there to me! I will fast forward these parts in the future because they annoy me that bad! Lol

So, I was wondering if anyone else here thinks that the pic of KR's mom might be old in their file? She does not look 81 in that pic. Maybe a little surgery, but still?
But I was thinking, what a great idea it would be if it was KR with her age changed. They were saying that She had been seen at the ferry, and that name didn't exist until after that. Would that mean that KR was on there as another person? They said all were accounted for except that one.

Tatiana - It reminded me of the campfire scene too. That was in The Vehm episode.

I thought the photo was supposed to be from way back when the CIA did its investigation (1991-1992 maybe). Kat's mom would have been in her 50s, the true age of Andrea Sooch. In Lotte's photos from the Episode 19 ferry shoot, Lotte was on the ferry and I thought her screen mama too.
I've never ridden on a ferry in that part of the country? Do you have to sign your name or something when you board as a passenger. The ferry we have here, you just pay and go. No one asks for ID.

Tuxie, as many times as I rode that ferry, we just got on and that was it. I don't remember anyone signing anything.

I always thought whatever shipping business Red was in had to do with antiquities, guns, and drugs.
It sounds like I was all wrong?
Does anyone know what kind of business Red is involved in? How does he make his money?
I know he steals things and sells them (artwork); I know he 'makes' money and launders it; I thought he traded in arms?
Thanks for any input.

He does deal in guns and drugs too from time to time. In the Director, he and Samar went to a storage locker he had and there were kilos in there that they used to stage a crime scene.
Samar,
I never took you for a Drug dealer?
Red,
Absolutely not. Well, not really.
I've made a rather healthy investment in a consortium that supplies
medical marijuana to facilities in Colorado, Oregon, Washington,
District of Columbia. But simply as an effort to diversify into more
legitimate businesses. As for consumption, I must admit to a fondness
for any well-appointed opium den, and a bit of hashish goes well with
just about anything. But stimulants, I have no taste for.
Cocaine still remains a valid currency to some of my clients.
Especially in England. The wealthy Brits? They are cocaine mad over there.'

Eastcoast - thank you :-) It sounds like he got into legitimate medical marijuana business and he tells us which ones he personally enjoys but I don't know? does that imply then that he actually does trade in drugs?

Sounds like it to me Tatiana. I felt like he was the pot calling the kettle black in this episode. He lies, steals, murders and trades drugs when it suits him and he feels it is justified.
I have to go back and look when I get time, but he was also trying to get in on the human smuggling business if my memory is correct. He felt like he could do a more honest job of it.

By the way, can anyone make out what is in Smokey's hand yet? The camera made a point of us seeing there was something there.
I wonder if he had something on him about Red for someone to find when he is found.

Tatiana - Red brokers arms deals for guns, bombs, and other dangerous substances. There was one instance where he suppiied arms to both sides in a conflict (can't remember the episode). There was a dicey situation once with some Germans he was supplying guns to, and the guns were late arriving. Think about the pilot. Red got that guy to diffuse the chemical bomb strapped to Beth in exchange for that guy getting to keep the bomb. That's arms dealing. He's buddies with Max the bomb maker. He met Josephine through her father, who was one of Europe's main arms dealers. He set up the kidnapping of Hans Von Hauser because he wanted an alliance with the young's man's father, Werner, who was an international arms dealer and smuggler. Then there was the Season 5 episode when Red made a deal with gun runners to get their jet, and he kept the guns to sell.

So the idea of a manifest for the ferry only happens in the show-verse and not real life. I didn't think there would be any way they could really know who was on the ferry, or their names.

Tuxie, I am talking about the Cape May Lewes Ferry.

What's in Smokey's hand? Prolly an ominous message to the cabal - and one written in Cabal Code - so that they know Red is in Sherlock Holmes Country - aka 'THE GAME IS AFOOT' - so why is he giving the cabal an early warning system? Simple. He wants to panic them out of hiding, get them frantic & crazy with fear - and while they do Red is watching, Red is observing . . . .

BBB you are so clever. Even with super charged coffee, I don't think I'd have ever figured that one out. :-)

Tuxie - re: Red and arms dealing - yes, that's what I thought and I also thought he ran some drugs, but the posters on the FB page are trying to say that Red only does legal transactions, doesn't run any drugs, etc.
Have I been duped this whole time?
All those scenes are what I remember as well. Oh, and what about all the times he puts not only temptation but the real thing in front of addicts: the fire guy who worked so valiantly to be in recovery from arson, the gambling guy (who was that, he opened the front door and there was Red and Liz and the guy shut the door and said I never want to see you again, wife left him etc) and somehow Red got him to make a run in Vegas that ruined his life.
Red is no angel.
It was just a weird response from other viewers. So I wanted to check other's understanding of Red's criminal empire.
