The psychiatrist was awesome and did you see that face twitch on Red?! And the dead, stone face stare he kept for the remainder of the psych's evaluation about him. I knew that the writers and Spader used Red's expressions to hint on things Now I'm more invested than ever to my thought that Red's expressions are a huge hint. In real life, only thru extreme training or if one is a genuine psychopath lacking all emotions, can one control their expressions fully.
Yes, I noticed that face twitch on Red. That's his tell.

After some serious thought (about 15 seconds for moi) I think the most intriguing character in the current episode arc (Court & Spark, sorry Joni Mitchell) might be Mr. Sima's (Ken Leung) assistant at the prosecution table. Interesting she has not uttered one word since she appeared. Show-runners must, I repeat must have something up their sneaky sleeves with her. Don't even know the actresses' name.
I didn't even notice this character. Maybe she becomes more vocal during jury selection.
We won't get to jury selection immo - complicates the basic plot w/ too many new faces.
However, if for some reason we get a jury trial and it plays out for 1 or 2 eps (have mercy, no longer than that) then Red should be calling in Bull from CBS as his jury consultant. . . . Denny Crane (William Shatner) as his 2nd chair!
Ratt Rattington can be the go-between . . . lol

BBB - We know from the future episode descriptions that Glen is involved in tampering with jury selection somehow. I don't think this will ever get to the trial part, but I think they will get to jury selection.

I thought some of the name choices were interesting in this episode.
Tatiana already mentioned Chione as being a figure in Greek mythology. (In the episode, Chione was the name of Digby Tameralne's company.) Apparently Chione bore the son of Poseidon and then threw the baby in the ocean to hide him from her father. Some call her the goddess of snow.
Tamerlane is the name of a poem and book of poems by Edgar Allan Poe. In Poe's poem, Tamerlane is conqueror of uncertain parentage with a "feigned" name. On his deathbed he regrets his decision to create a kingdom in exchange for a broken heart. The themes of the poem are loss and exile. Doesn't that sound like the Blacklist?
Koehler's nurse was named Marguerite Renard. Renard means fox in French. I wonder if this woman will be sly and cunning.
We've already mentioned the name Atticus. I do think they picked that name in reference to Atticus Finch - because of the bird part of the plot. Honey West, you were right. I looked carefully at the birds and did not see one Finch. In addition, I think the birds were brought into the plot and all the talk of flying as homage to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. In that movie, a prisoner gets himself sent to a psychiatric facility because he thinks life will be easier.

Tuxie - sometimes a search on Tamarlane will bring up Timur, a horrific barbarian
I completely agree about the references in the psychiatric unit being references to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Tatiana - Yes, the Turk Timur is the subject of Poe's Tamarlane poem. Thanks for the link. It's interesting that he fought the Russians at one point and occupied Moscow. Also the Soviets were the ones who disenterred his skeleton.

This latest episode had a lot of references, repeated references, that made me prick my ears up. These are in no particular order, just things that made me think twice.
Mad as a hatter - Alice in Wonderland
Jiminy Christmas! - Red
"Angel of Death" - Dr. Mengele, the brutal Nazi 'doctor' who conducted horrific experiments on live human subjects
As a side note, did you know he had a fascination with heterochromia? Two different eye colors. Remember the boy who witnessed Ian Garvey murder the police officer? He was stolen away by a man with two colored eyes.
Mengele also collected the eyes of his murdered victims. 'memento morti' (just like the stewmaker did)
The PI who was looking into Klepper said this,
"Klepper stayed off the grid no citizenship, no taxes, no footprint, nothing."
Sound familiar? It should, it's just like the description Ressler made of Red in the Pilot, He has no country. No
political agenda.
You make him sound like an actuary. - Liz
You sound like an an actuary - Katarina to Red at Cape May
Everyone's favorite superpower is flying like a bird.
I'd prefer mind control.
MK Ultra/LSD, mind control experiments, Dr. Linus Creel
DR. GRAY: "I get angry sometimes.
" Yes or no.
Red " No."
I get even.
Is that a look of concern or keen interest? .... Keen interest. (note the word usage, he certailnly is intersted in Keen)
"I wish I could be as happy as others seem to be.
" Yes.
"My father was a good man."
"Good? No."
"You're masquerading. Leading a double life, pretending to be someone you're not. If you're divorced from social norms, it's because you're divorced from a side of yourself I can't see because you're terrified of letting people see it. Why, I don't know. But whatever pathologies you have I think they can be traced to the fact that, while most people see you as a, uh, iconic bad guy, you're really just an impostor.
I'm gonna rip your tongue out! (Greek mythology has it the Tereus cut out Philomena's tongue after raping her)
Buck is a god.
He traced the phone?
He bounced the signal off of Venus or Mars
Venus and Mars are actually Roman gods, but they are typically associated with female and male.

Tatiana - Great references! When Red said Jiminy Christmas! I though of lara1 and how she used to collect those Christmas references. This was a particularly rich episode.
I especially liked the last one about Venus and Mars typically being associated with female and male.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw Glen would be tampering with the jury was the time he was driving with the lady in the car and Red was in the back. I can only imagine who he sends for the jury!

Thanks, Tatiana!
I haven't re-watched it, yet (I will soon) -- but I had a thought as I was re-reading the dialog. I wonder if Red will end up killing Dr. Gray because she said Red was an imposter?
Offline
Iowa Watcher - I think Red will leave Dr. Gray alone. She may know he's an imposter, but she's unsure of what kind and does not know his real identity.

Red knows how smart Dr. Gray is - he'll either try to silence her or thru typical Reddington chicanery - try to bring her into his fold. Nothing is impossible to Red. Nothing!

Did you notice the treason charge the judge read in this episode. She said Red was being charged with selling classified data to Russia. We've never heard that before. Ressler's story from the pilot was that in 1994 classified data turned up in three places:
Mahgreb, Africa
Islamabad, Pakistan
Beijing, China
Have the writers forgotten the original treason charges, or is this something new? I wonder if this act of treason will predate 1990.

Yes, I found it very odd and out of place, too, Tuxie. What happened to the gun charge? And selling secrets to the Russians was never spoken of.
Offline
Hope the show-runners haven't turned to Tom Arnold as "Keeper of the Mythology" lol
Offline
The judge found the search was reasonable, so the illegal gun violated Reddington's earlier immunity agreement.
Offline
BBB - Part of the problem is there doesn't seem to be a Keeper of the Mythology at all. Brussels became Belgrade. A downtown fire became a beachside fire. Liz thinks her kidnapping happened in Russia.
Offline
If I remember correctly, somebody told me here that Jon had said the mythos in pilot and rest of the series don't match. With regard of how old Liz was when she got her scar.
So it might have to do with this, the inconsistency of the treason info.
Offline
NP - To my knowledge, Bokenkamp has never publicly addressed the two ages Liz gives for the fire in the pilot. Fans have speculated Liz gave the age as 14 to Red because she didn't trust him with the info, or she might have been trying to bait him into giving her different info about the fire. Other than the pilot, the show has always given her age as four for the fire. Bokenkamp has never said to disregard the facts laid out in the pilot.

Ah, ok. So I must have misunderstood at some point.
