Episode 6.06 - The Ethicist

Well friends, this looks like it will be interesting! We are celebrating my husband's birthday at his mom's tonight so I don't know if I will be able to join you in the discussion as I may not see it until tomorrow.

Anyway, can't wait to get new information!

Re: Episode 6.06 - The Ethicist

Happy Birthday to your husband, Tatiana! You're lucky you can celebrate tonight. It's in the single digits here, and most who have birthdays today and this weekend are postponing the parties until it is warmer.

I hope this is a good episode tonight!

Re: Episode 6.06 - The Ethicist

So we already have a Alice in Wonderland reference, Mad Hatter, and 'you sound like an actuary'.

This is interesting.

Re: Episode 6.06 - The Ethicist

Oh my gosh, this episode is loaded!
So now he says he prefers mind control?
What was it about super heroes?
And the psychiatrist/psychologist read him like a book: an impostor!
Plus, they threw in a few ancient greek/roman references that are freaking me out:
the name of the company - khione?
and Atticus, which was also from

Re: Episode 6.06 - The Ethicist

The Atticus I know was from "To Kill a Mocking Bird."

Yes, I've got to rewatch this episode. It might have been me because I'm whipped after this week, but I had a hard time following the storyline.

Just one thing, and I'll get some sleep. I thought it was so weird for Jennifer to say something along the lines of, "Would you have done that before you met him? (Red) and . . . he (Red) did this to you?

I don't know what to make of that tonight, but it tinged my radar . . . what an odd thing for her to say!

Added: Ressler has gone to the dark side, too. He didn't tell Cooper the truth.

Re: Episode 6.06 - The Ethicist

Ditto to everything you guys have said!  There was a lot in that episode.

So, he doesn't say his father is a good person?  That stood out to me.

IW, that statement by her was really odd.

Re: Episode 6.06 - The Ethicist

And one question: was someone listening in on Red's call to Dembe? I'll have to go back and pause that part of the scene.

I saw that the camera was looking into his cell. I didn't see anyone behind him. Will have to check again.

We know only a few tiny details about his father, what he drove and his aftershave (I think) -- or some sort of face product.

Okay, I'll tackle this again in the morning. I don't want to write anything really dumb.

“Bill: Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears - the glasses, the business suit - that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He's weak... he's unsure of himself... he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race.” Kill Bill: Volume 2

Re: Episode 6.06 - The Ethicist

This was a great episode!  I'm so excited that Liz and Jen have a real lead now: the nurse, Marguerite Renard. They will be looking for her next episode, while Red will be seeking General Shiro.

The scenes in the psychiatric center had a "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" feel. I loved Red switching Atticus' meds with Skittles, and the interactions with the psychiatrist were fascinating. I found the most interesting thing was Red answering that no, his father was not a good man. It was a surprise when the doctor told him she knew he was masquerading - that he was living a double life as an imposter. Red can snow a lot of people, but not that psychiatrist.

I'm glad we got to see a little bit more of Jennifer's character. She was horrified that Liz would trade a name for Klepper's suicide, and she worried her involvement with the Reddington imposter might leave her morally bankrupt too. Obviously, Liz is the more twisted sister here.

The Ethicist wasn't the greatest Blacklister, but Klepper was an effective plot device to move the story forward. It's interesting that they used him with two parallels from Cape May: having him consider himself and actuary and having him kill someone by slamming their head on a bathroom sink.

When caught in her deception, I was surprised Liz didn't spill the whole thing to Ressler. I do think, if she had, Res would be willing to help her and Jennifer in their pursuit of the truth. After all, he's complained about Red in every episode so far.  I think it's just a matter of time before Liz pulls Ressler into her investigation.

Tatiana and Iowa Watcher - The name Atticus punched my Atticus Finch button too. I see that Atticus was a ancient philosopher. That must be the reference Tatiana made.

Atticus's rage was very similar to Randle McMurphy's attack upon Nurse Ratched over Billy's suicide (as I've mentioned before, the actor who played Billy is 'Jennifer's'  father (truly 'one face' when you see them sdie by side) .

Yes, that really stood out to me.  Dad was not a good person.
