Fire Imagery in Season 5

I've put together a list of all the fire imagery so far this season. I've found something in each episode. Since there's been more than any other season, I believe this is leading up to a Fire Night reveal. I will update this for each episode.

  • 5.01 Smokey Putnum calls in a bomb threat in the courthouse to escape.
  • 5.02   Red orders things burned or microwaved in Blaise’s house. (Blaze)
  • 5.03  None in dialog or visuals, but these lyrics were heard from the song Lit Me Up:

It lit me up
It lit me up
It lit me up like a rag soaked in gasoline
In the neck of bottle breaking
right at my feet
It lit me up
and I burn from the inside out

  • 5.04  The Endling sets a barn with thoroughbred horses on fire. There is an explosion in Princess Sofia's hotel with lots of smoke. There's a barbecue barrell smoking behind Liz and Tom as the outdoor restaurant.
  • 5.05 The case involved several explosions. It opened with ashes that looked like snow and a little boy complaining that his eye burned. Burn notices were issued for Brian Osterman. After Liz shoot Osterman, a fiery explosion occurs. It ends with a cloud of thick, black smoke.
  • 5.06  Red uses a lighter to heat a drug mixture in a spoon. Calvin Dawson, the assassin, kills a man with an axe, which is a fireman’s tool. In the Dawson’s closet, Liz discovers a ladder to the attic. Ladders are another fireman’s tool.
  • 5.07 Goga, the coyote for the human smugglers, tells Ressler, “The minute you raided, our dispatch sent a burn signal to our drivers.” A ladder is prominently displayed in the barn where Garvey is holding Tom, Lena and Pete.
  • 5.08 Tom sets Garvey’s cars on fire using Molotov cocktails. When Red/Dembe/Tom abandon the Mercedes, there is smoke coming off the car.
  • 5.09  Liz torches two of the criminals who are trying to kill her and burns them alive – one with gasoline and a lighter and the other with an accelerant and a flare gun. A fire is burning in the fireplace throughout the episode. Smoke is coming from the generator at the beginning of the episode.
  • 5.10  Red lights the match that burns a gasoline-drenched Prescott alive in the prison transport van. Liz sets a stack of bills on fire using flames from a restaurant grill as a threat to get Pee Wee to tell her Navarro’s location.
  • 5.11 .Abraham Stern used his four-penny inheritance to buy fireball candies. The boiler originally provided heat to the building by burning oil, coal or natural gas to heat water and make steam heat. Liz uses chemicals to stew Navarro’s body such as fluorosulfuric acid that has exothermic reactions when mixed with water and other fluids. These products can cause chemical burns.
  • 5.12  The Cook episode is about a former arson investigator/arsonist (Fagen) helping the task force catch a serial murderer (Tommy Wattles) who kills to purify his female victims with fire. A sophisticated arsonist, Wattles strings his accelerants like party lights at the scenes for multiple points of origin. We see Wattles turn on the flames to a gas stove. At the end, Wattles sets himself ablaze to purify and kill himself. Red lets Fagen know he owes him his freedom and a fire job in the future. The Ring of Fire song kindles the fire imagery.
  • 5.13  The smoke bomb involved in the drug war causes Red’s vision to be obscured, and he accidentally shoots his associate, Anthony.
  • 5.14  None
  • 5.15  Red plans to use Fagen to burn down the Critter Camp, but changes his mind. Fagen ends up starting a fire involving the smoke detector at the IRS that destroys their records on Red's business. The arsonist is put on retainer. Episode features lots of quotes about fires and burning. "I need someone who sees the fire in my eyes and wants to play with it."
  • 5.16  None
  • 5.17  Ana-Gracia Duerte blows up a car, turning it in to a fireball.
  • 5.18  You see a fireball when explosive charges go off in the elevator shaft.

Re: Fire Imagery in Season 5

Thanks Tuxie400.  Right up my street, so to speak!  really enjoyed reading it.  I don't know if I noted the parallel to the Cook cooking on a gas stove in the beginning, and Liz burning the meal she was cooking on the stove in her apt.  Set off the smoke alarm and Baz came running in (miss Baz!).  But that is what I immediately thought of when I saw that opening scene.  And Liz ends that episode by reading from the Wizard of Oz....

Tuxie and lara1 - I appreciate the acknowledgements!

lara1 - I think you mentioned that gas stove parallel in the The Cook episode. Be sure to add it to your parallels, and I'll insert the part about the gas stove above.

Re: Fire Imagery in Season 5

I've added a few more things from the Endling episode to the main fire imagery list (explosion and smoke).  I also noticed there were those white fairy lights like by Red's newly acquired plane at the barbecue restaurant where Liz met Tom for a normal lunch.

Re: Fire Imagery in Season 5

great observation Tuxie400 - and, the same restaurant, by the way, where tom just happens to steal her badge so he can try to identify the bones, which may - or may not - be linked to fire night.

Yes, barbecue restaurant. And now so many people have been barbecued.

Re: Fire Imagery in Season 5

...exactly!  I wonder if the writers had  a kind of joke with that one too.   So much stuff right in front of our faces that may fly over our heads, there is so much to take in with each episode.......

I didn't think to connect that at all! Lol

Re: Fire Imagery in Season 5

Well, I thought we had some fire imagery in the song Cut Me Down, which was used in Raleigh Sinclair III, but the line about burning and fire is the only one not audible. I think it got edited out in the final cut. The song does contain many of the BL symbols: birds, water, fire, dance. And even stepping out of one's shadow - perhaps a reference to Jung's shadow self.  It is an eerie song, but oddly fitting for the graveside scene.

Cut Me Down
by Kevin Morby

Birds will gather at my side
Tears will gather in my eyes
Throw my head and cry
As vultures circle in the sky

And you're going to do
What you came here to do
So why not do it now
Oh and cut me down

No one, nowhere to go
Step out of my shadow
Take me as I am
A man

And they're going to do
What they came here to do
You can see it in them now
They're going to cut me down

looking for a fire, I'm looking to burn
looking for the water, the water i wept
looking for the dance, the dance that I did
looking for the dead, the dead that I left

Tuxie400, did you accidentally delete it,  (or maybe just changed your mind about what to add?)

Re: Fire Imagery in Season 5

lara1 - Thanks for alerting me. It was under 5.14 instead of 5.15. I'm not good at typing numbers. LOL  It's in the right place now.

Re: Fire Imagery in Season 5

oh OK I see it now.  I find the format fiddly sometimes, especially when using bullets and indentation.

This is a good list Tuxie, I didn't think of 5.7 at all.
