Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

This was a great episode.  Megan really did a fantastic job!

I agree that I wouldn't want to see Agnes with her either Brittany but no one asked me either.

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

Tuxie, 7, I agree. I think she will use being on the task force as a means to an end.

HW,  could be the guy at the store. I wondered if it was the guy they killed at first.  But who knows, Red probably has a few people working for him up there.

And I also think Cooper knows something especially the way red said that to him it was a tone he used.

I still don't think Tom died that night. I think he died later in September just like it says on that tag.

For one thing when Cooper went to go see them at the hospital he was wearing a different suit and tie than he was when he went to go I D Tom's body. And he was holding an Overcoat indicating it was possibly cooler weather.

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

Great Episode! One of my favorite scenes was when Liz eating at the kitchen table. Reminded me of when Kate and Mountain Man were in his cabin. I couldn't really follow the bad guys storyline, but maybe that's because they too kept changing details. Liz "The Killer" Keen was in full effect last night. I'm anxious to see where she goes from here and how far is too far for her. I thought it was odd Dembe didn't seem excited to open the door and find Liz on the other side. He loves her and I didn't even feel he was relieved or shocked, and since he's a man of little words, his expressions really say it all. Not even a hug, unless I blinked and missed it. I loved that the dog's name was Kate! RIP pup!

The little I read on Twitter, people seemed to think Liz was behaving more and more like Red, but I think maybe she was more like her mother - resourceful, smart, clever.
She was also described as a ghost at the end, like Katarina or even Kate, if you go with the ghost from the wishing well thing.

So, was Red also consumed by vengeance at some point, to where it led him along the path he followed. Did anybody ever try to stop him or talk him out of it?

immo - the episode was designed to illustrate Liz's slow but steady ascent into being a total combination of all her "creators", ie. Red, Tom, Dembe, Kate, Aram, Mozhan, even a tiny bit of Glen in there.
She incorporated aspects of all them into her "new" revised character. The Red aspect was the most unusual perhaps - a unique sense of going glib at the most unusual moments - including telling Criminal #1 that she had ground a bit of glass into his cubes. That was truly grotesque but delivered in such a cute, literal way you were cheering for the hero before the criminals had even fallen. . . . . . BUT were being set up for their falls.

Too bad the new dog, Kate had to meet its maker. But the show-runners needed a simple device to set off Lizzie's rage - they did a good job of it. Liz knew what was happening when she knocked off her power - in order to get outside and create a so-called firewall vs. the criminals. She had already poisoned the bads.

Kate, Tom and Ms. Rostova would have been supremely proud of their little girl.

Honey West - I do think the Warrior Gene is burning bright in Liz now. As for ghosts, Katarina and Red were both described as ghosts in Season 2. I think the Mako Tanida episode told us Red was at first consumed by both vengeance and grief.

Patter - A lot about it reminded me of Kate and Mountain Man.

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

There are fairly oblique parallels to Dr. Frankenstein creating "his monster" in the way Raymond Reddington (aka Dr. Frankenstein) has created a truly scary character out of timid and life-effacing Elizabeth.

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

Honey West - I did wonder too whether Red did keep his promise.  But in any event, the guy in the hardware store describing "Grace",  reminded me so much of Anton Velov describing Katarina, both in what he looked like physically and the words he spoke in parallel dialogue.

Its interesting to me also the comment about the cleaner.  We never saw Liz following Kate around and "learning" what she did, exactly.  It's a lot to learn.  But maybe Liz was doing this on the side.  I was still surprised by that comment though.  Maybe its just me.  But we have had 3 overlapping cleaners now:  Kaplan, KR (in Cape May) and now Liz.

Patter - I found the last scene a bit oddly disjointed.  Dembe and Red seemed rather detached.

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

I agree with most of the comments on here.  All in all a great episode.

The Rostova in Masha has truly come out.  I actually think she's channelling her KR in more ways than one.  Red taught her how to think and obviously he plotted a lot of killings and the like, but honestly I think she gets her skills from KR, not Red, though he has groomed her to tap into them.  (And even though I still don't think Red is her father, I am stating that regardless, even if he is. )

I thought it was more like he already knew about it. Probably from the hardware store guy.
Then again, there were also FBI agents on the scene after it all went down so maybe it was a combination of the two. Remember, Red never tells more about what he knows and how he knows it than he absolutely needs to, usually in order to move things along.. heck, maybe Cooper told him.

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

Happy New Year Everyone!

Completely agree with all the posts about Ruin. Megan was amazing - I was both disturbed and impressed by her creative, well-planned killing skills. For the record, I'd make a terrible FBI agent/killer - completely didn't notice the bad guy chewed ice cubes until Liz brought it up

Loved the Leonard Cohen song opening and that Liz was playing it on vinyl.

Agreed that Liz's scenes with Red seemed cold, especially given their last scene together when she awoke from the coma. Maybe Red is holding back, trying to give Liz the independence she wants but also needs to recover.

It was weird seeing Dembe act coldly though. All I could figure is that he and Red just heard about the killings in Alaska and were stunned. "Our little Lizzie did WHAT?!"

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

Hi Colleen - Good to see you checking in on the episode. I think Red was holding back too - in all three of their scenes. I think he's feeling a lot of emotions but is trying to keep them in check. He knows how emotionally fragile she still is and is trying not to smother her or drive her away for good. But I do think they were both being honest with one another in this episode.

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

I wanted to re-watch the episode before pulling together my thoughts, because I had a feeling that there was something unusual going on, kind of like a subtext but needed a good look.

Did anyone notice all of the vintage stuff that looked like it was from the 1950s?  The refrigerator definitely is a 1950s model, and a couple of the canned good items looked vintage too - kind of like dry goods, or COFFEE CANS, and the pretzel tin on top of the refrigerator.  Of course, it could just be the deliberate vibe of the cabin, but some of the bowls and kitchen utensils also looked vintage.

Lastly, at the very end, when the FBI are looking at the scene, there's a close up of a Flexible Flyer sled in the barn/garage (reminded me of KR's toys in Dom's barn/garage).  I'm fairly certain the model of the sled is late 1950s - I had one as a child and its still in my parents basement, so I know it well.

Just some interesting food for thought.......

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

We had another phonograph in the cabin in last night's episode.
Honey West, I was wondering if you recognized it as similar to the one in Red's flat.  It had the same kind of plastic cover also.  I seem to remember you knew something about the one in Red's flat?  I hope that I am not confusing you with someone else.  LOL

Re: Episode 5.09 - Ruin - Discussion Page

I wasn't too sure what to make of that last scene with Red: I can't tell whether he's concerned or resigned to Liz's transformation. There's a whole backstory that we can only guess at.

I liked the flashback with Scottie! That was a great way to resolve the Agnes problem.

So, now the show runners have rebooted the show and have a clean screen, so to speak. What's next?
