Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

lara1 - All the doubles and mirrors just make me think of split personality in that Red is a reflection. The song lyrics "You are always here with me" especially make me think of the Multiple Personality theory, and I love the song's haunting tone. Meera's name does sound like mirror!

In The Freelancer, I think there are so many references to doubles and twos because the theme of episode is duality and it's the second episode.

That is very interesting that the results of the ballistics report came in a manilla envelope labeled Ballistics Report,  a definite parallel to the DNA report in Ian Garvey that none of us remembered when that episode aired.  I didn't even notice it when I rewatched in late November. LOL I think it's highly likely there is a flag on the DNA report because it was classified. Cooper actually said the head of Homeland Security would have to be briefed on conversations regarding the ballistics report. We never met that person in the show.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

I was rewatching The Director last ngiht and noticed a parallel with Tom that I hadn't remembered. In the apartment shooting in Ian Garvey, Tom holds up his hand in a defensive gesture when Red shoots the man next to him. The same gesture occurred in the cabin shootout with Solomon and his men when Tom thinks Karakurt is going to shoot him.  But Karakurt is aiming at a Solomon underling in back of Tom.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Hey, I just came across this and I found it curious, although not necessarily telling of anything.

Timothy McVey the Oklahoma City Building Bomber, was convicted of killing all 168 victims. He was committed to the death penalty. On the day he was to die, he gave the warden the poem "Invicticus" as his last words.

_____________________________________The Final Words of Death Row Prisoners
When Timothy McVeigh set off the bomb which took down the federal building in Oklahoma City, he killed 168 people. It is believed he was looking to make a statement as some sort of revenge for what happened at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco a couple years earlier.----
For his crime, McVeigh was sentenced to death by lethal injection, a punishment which was carried out just over six years after the bombing took place. For his final statement, Timothy McVeigh gave to the warden a copy of the William Ernest Henley poem “Invictus.”
It ends as follows:
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Tuxie400 #161 - I agree about the Freelancer, though I do find the line that Red delivers about having the devil and angel, and having kicked one out, curious.

The other thing I thought of is that the dinner scene at the end of Wujing, which I mentioned above, with the candles and glasses, is in effect a mirror image.  Because not only are there two candles and two extra glasses, the placement is kind of like a mirror image:  Red sits with a lit candle to his left and to his right, and then to the right, are his water and wine glasses.  To his left, are the two empty glasses.  And the "here with me" words of the song are playing, as we noted.   its extremely subtle, and placed so well that I never even noticed it before.   hmm

Tatiana - hi!  hope you are enjoying the holidays!  that's interesting about Invictus......

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

oh, I'm thinking about the ballistic and DNA reports, and I think maybe it goes beyond paralleling, almost a mirror image also.  Liz has a report run on Tom and gets results (probably/maybe involving Tom); Tom has a DNA report run on the bones but using Liz's ID with results (probably/maybe) something connected to Liz in some way.  answers and non/answers given in both, maybe....

Tuxie400 # 162.  I think if we look for it, those parallels are everywhere.  As a group we've picked up on multiple instances of repeated dialogue and parallel scenarios, some of which are obvious.  But I think there are a lot more out there.....  Enjoyed reading about that one from the Director....

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Tatiana - Thanks for sharing your info about McVey and Invictus!

lara1 - I'll have to rewatch the Wujing scene with Red and the mirror image of the glasses and candles. I never noticed the empty glasses. There's a lot of visual imagery that goes right past me. I'm an auditory learner, so it's mostly the dialog I hear that captures my mind.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

I just wanted to recommend Wormwood, a 6-part documentary series, released a couple of weeks ago on Netflix. It involves the strange death in 1953 of Frank Olson, an Army biological warfare scientist who died nine days after being dosed with LSD as part of an MK Ultra experiment. It got me thinking a lot about MK Ultra connections to the Blacklist. And I will be posting some of these connections on THRUSHES.

That's on my to-watch list, Tuxie.  Probably this weekend.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Tuxie400 #168 - thanks for that info on Wormwood.  I just read about it the other day and wondered whether it was worth watching.  I recently watched Alias Grace, I liked it though it left me puzzled at the end - but I think that's the essence of it.  An early type of psycho analyst working with a girl accused of a murder.  The show shifts back and forth from there mental imagery of various things that happened both in the murder and other events in her life.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

So tonight I watched Stewmaker and Courier.  What fantastic episodes.  Just a couple of observations, we may have talked about these before, but I think they are interesting in retrospect.

Stewmaker
- he has a large, dark dog - and when he takes off his disguise, he is bald
-the hotel clerk's name is Ray
- the motel room that he checks into is red, even the bath and the tiling around it (though that may be for visual effect!)
- Liz finds out about ANGEL hotel and the case file on the Boston homicide is 12-11571 because it took place in 2012
-the Stewmaker carries his utensils in a black bag and the flannel roll he stores them in reminded me of the roll of knives at the car dealership in Season 4
-he wears an oxygen mask
- we see him in motel room #1222 - which is, interestingly, a version of Fitch's apt number - in Russia - which was 221, while Glen took Red to Apt 212
- Red comments that the Stewmaker knows where all of the bodies are buried - almost exactly what Kaplan's words to Red were
-when Ressler and Red meant with Lorca, Lorca tells his man to be ready to cut Ressler's HEAD off
- Red comments to Lorca that Ressler is a wonderful DANCER
- Red makes Lorca sit tight for 12 hours before fleeing
- Red finds the Stewmaker in the CABIN via his DOG and the K-9 evidence in the Post Office

The Courier
- In the first scene when Liz has her nightmare, Tom is wearing a shirt with an emblem on it and there is a big red apple logo on it
- Red reads aloud a letter to the editor that his writer friend wrote, "What's with all the RABBITS..."
- The Courier's name was TOMMY PHELPS.  (Wow how did I forget that one?)

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

lara1 - The Courier was the first Blacklist episode I ever watched, and it made me a fan right away. But it was the Stewmaker that really wowed me. For a long time he was my top Blacklister. I had noticed most of the things you mentioned, except the numbers. For some reason, about the only number that ever captures my attention is 36. I had never noticed the hotel clerk's name was Ray, and It is funny that the Courier's name was Tommy Phelps like Tom Keen/Jacob Phelps. Did you note the Angel part of Angel Station as a Christmas reference, or did you have something else in mind? In retrospect, I always laugh when Red reads that letter and it says "What's with all the rabbits?" It had to be predicting what all the fans would say as the show progressed.

haha! me too! The backstory of the previous occupant of the home was so peculiar and this only added to that 'oddity' and humor.

Lara - "- The Stewmaker's name was TOMMY PHELPS.  (Wow how did I forget that one?)"

I think you mean that the Courier's name is Tommy Phelps, not the Stewmaker who was Stanley

Thanks Tatiana!  Yes, I meant the Courier.  Stanley Kornish is on my list of Blacklister names that begin with a K, LOL

I went back and corrected it in the original post above.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Tuxie400 #172.  Yes, the angel is a Christmas reference.  But it also links with the angel/devil reference from The Freelancer, just 2 eps earlier.  What it means overall is still open!

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

I got to thinking about the attempted child abduction in Wujing and whether its a parallel to fire night, where Dr. ORCHARD told Liz that the people in her memories could be switched around.

Wujing - Dr. Cho is an ARCHITECT, a civilian, who is working with the CIA in their counter espionage efforts with the Chinese

He has a young son - age? not known, but young.

The gang of "bad guys" comes to the construction site and Cho HIDES his son in an out of the way corner and covers him with a large tarp.  He also tells him something like not to come out until he says so.  Parallel with whomever put Liz in the closet on fire night.

The bad guys though find the child, pull him from his hiding place, and attempt to abduct him/threaten him to gain leverage over the father, presumably.

In the fire memories, someone takes Liz from the closet.  We've assumed its her "father" leading her out of the house to safety.  but what if it wasn't that at all, it was an attempted abduction by a "bad guy", who wanted the child for leverage, perhaps over KR?  In Liz's memory she does not remember that, is it possible that her "father" was replaced as the person leading her out?

Its unclear whether the person leading her out actually takes her outside the house.  We see various flashpoints where Liz appears to be looking at herself in the burning house and she does appear to watch the three men who leave the house though its unclear exactly what is happening as various flashpoints move around very quickly.

This is all pure speculation but suppose someone (Red? her "father"?) tried to intercede with what was happening and was shot or otherwise incapacitated?  Any thoughts?

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

I've personally always believed it was a woman who was leading Masha out of the fire - a woman who had hearts on her bracelet. But something happened to make her stop holding Liz's hand.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Tuxie400 - that could be.  There's one part of the memories where it looks like it could be a woman with long dark hair but its hard to tell.  I think its clearer though that a woman with long dark hair tried to prevent Liz from going into the room where the men were fighting.  So Naomi and Scottie both have long dark hair.  Then again, we don't know if that's a replaced memory.....I haven't seen the heart bracelet though.  Bracelets do figure in the mythology though - the one that Beth gave to Liz and the one that was buried in the coffee can.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Where I get the bracelet idea is the two heart imprints that we see on the scorched bunny when Red picks it up after Liz's fake death.. Until that time, I'd never noticed those imprints. In the fire memories, Masha wasn't wearing a bracelet. I think the prints had to be left by whoever got her out - probably Katarina since we know she liked bracelets.
