Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Tatiana - I tried watching the video, but it's just too slow for me - like everything on C-span. The articles - Wikipedia and others online - are much quicker to getting the facts of his story. I was fascinated that he started his path to establishing identificatiion by getting a membership card at the Natural History Museum.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

I agree that also I think he lived in the US at least for a while when KR was young based on what we saw in the trunk. Or else he spent enough time here to bring her back those toys to wherever she was living.  But he isn’t going to acknowledge that to Liz and I doubt he was here in a legal sense (in terms of immigration’s opinion on it) until after KR vanishes or whatever . His asylum status would be easy for her to trace so he would have likely been truthful about that and anything else she could verify with CIA.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Slow, Tuxie, CSPan? no wonder why I keep nodding off hahaha!!! Yes, any cspan is monotonously slow, but I wanted to hear about his story even aside from TBL. It was interesting in that he spoke of the complexity of being a spy and having a family, well, two families to be exact. One comment he made, how can you let her know how much you love her? speaking of his daughter. And he spoke of keeping his families safe, that his German family was not safe as long as he was in country.

I'll have to watch that clip sometime.  It sounds interesting.  I can sit through just about anything.  There's nothing too gruesome or dull that can't keep my attention.   I can't follow Reddit to save my life, but I can listen to terrible story-tellers drone for hours. Go figure.

Brittany - same here... I am completely lost with Reddit...

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

The problem with Reddit is that the posts are not in chronological order in the default. Users vote on replies, and the ones with the most votes go to the top of a thread. If you are a regular Reddit reader, you see the threads starting. Then you must click on new to see the newer ones, instead of the "best" ones, each time.

Tatiana - Do tells us anything else juicy you learned from the video. I just don't have the patience with it.

I've heard the BL reddit group is pretty good, but I just can't follow it well. lol.  I guess I'll have to miss out.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

The other interesting thing about Take12 is that its a US version of a UK game (or vice versa).  Hence another UK link.  So that's another thing about Dom's backstory - his "English" references - which Red has used from time to time as well, but not in as obvious a way like the word "nappies".

I have to say I've recently given up on Reddit.  Too cumbersome to use/follow unless you look at it daily.  And sometimes there are inane comments on there.  But I agree some of the posters there come up with interesting theories, wolfbythestream having had some really interesting ideas.

.

It may be based on where or from whom Dom learned English.  My husband was Pakistani and when learning English he was taught the UK vernacular and continued to use it even after moving to the US.  Nappies and lifts and trolleys, adding 'u' into words that end in 'or', using an 's' in place of a 'z', etc..

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Brittany - agree, it could very well be where Dom learned English.  I think that its a place where he lived for a while and maybe got ingrained in the culture, to still be speaking and using English words instead of American words for common things, so many years later.

I lived in London for 15 years and gradually picked up a lot of local words for things, some of them pretty obscure (my English friends applauded when I started using "Kirby grips" instead of "bobby pins", LOL).  When I came back to the US, I sometimes had problems remembering whether a particular phrase was English or American, LOL.  So I do think it comes from Dom having "infiltrated" the UK in some way - whether for years as a student, or otherwise.    Its interesting to ponder, especially with Red's MI-5 connections and his occasional use of "English" words as well.  Yet another layer to be unravelled.....

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Lara- I'm sure that is very likely.

I'd love to know why Red made a deal with MI-6 and Emma Knightly.  Sometimes I've wondered if she was a trial run for what he planned to do with Liz at the FBI later on.  I think the year Emma started working for him (2009?) would have been about the same time Liz started with the FBI in the mobile emergency psych team.  🤷🏼‍♀️

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

I've been trying to ID the type of glasses Garvey wears. I find them very interesting since they have silver crosses as the hardware. Someone on Reddit today identified them as vintage horn rim Baush and Lomb safety glasses from the 1950s. I looked that up, and the glasses are indeed a match. Anyone have an idea why show runners would have him wear those?

Jonny Coyne wore similar 60s-style Baush and Lomb safety glasses when he starred as the warden in the short-lived Alcatraz series on Fox, but does not wear glasses in real life.  That show was set both in 1963 and present, and those Alcatraz glasses were black, had the crosses, but the bottoms of the frames were metal.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Aesthetically I think they are kind of ominous.  To me I think of a very intelligent bad guy.  Glasses generally are used to signify rational thinking and intelligence.  The bold frames stand out, perhaps being a physical representation of Garvey’s bold personality and his comfort with himself as he is.

There sure are vintage looking!  You should add them to your parallel list Lara1.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

I just broke down what I feel are the culpability percentages for responsibility for Tom's death in a twitter conversation:
60% Garvey for doing the actual killing, 20% Tom for making bad choices, 10% Kaplan for being salty and 10% Red for being a liar. I'm not sure what that says about me that I could break it down that quickly. lol

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

That's an interesting take on the culpability. Mine's a little different:

40% Garvey for doing the actual killing, 30% Kaplan because she had to know it would put Tom in harm's way, 20% Red for lying, 10% Tom for making bad choices.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Interesting Tuxie.  I give Kaplan a bit of a break because I believe her intentions were for it to get to Liz (she bears a lot more responsibility for what happened to Liz because I think the suitcase would have put her in the crosshairs no matter what).  I don't know that she expected Tom to not give it to Liz and handle it all on his own (though if she is did anticipate that, then she goes up in percentages).  And Red doesn't get as much heat from me because he warned Tom multiple times, saved him, and Tom still made the choices he did because he didn't trust Liz to get the answers on her own and he wanted to be in opposition to Red even knowing how dangerous the situation was getting.  If he hadn't just watched an innocent woman be shot, then run through a wood chipper, I might be have been kinder in dividing responsibility.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

I think it all begs the question of what Kaplan knew and did not know.  Regardless of what tom did or didn't do, regardless of what Red did or didn't do, unearthing the bones meant they saw the light of day again when they probably should not have (for whatever reason, whatever theory one follows) and the bones were going to be identified.  Garvey would have found out regardless.  So I think Kaplan shoulders a lot of the blame, either because she knew all this and did it willingly nonetheless, or she did not know everything but playing "God" in a way, thinking she knew what was best and hence controlling lives and outcomes because of her own views, played a large role, IMO.

Re: Season 5 Fall/Winter Hiatus Discussions

Agreed, Lara. Or as Red has said, "What have you done?"... do you have any idea what you have done and what the reverberations will be not just to one person in one time, but many people over many times and many ages.
That's what I sensed in Kate's actions.
